Description

Understanding Glazes with John Post

Tuesdays |  Jan 14 – Feb 18 | Tues 1-4pm  |  6 Instructor-Led Class Sessions + 6 Open Studio Practice Sessions

Unleash your creativity and discover the fascinating world of glaze-making in this hands-on, in-depth course. Much like baking, glaze-making involves following recipes, measuring ingredients, and using heat to transform simple materials into beautiful, vibrant finishes. With a little patience and experimentation, you’ll learn how to control every aspect of your glazes—from surface texture to color variation—giving you the ability to create the perfect glaze for your pottery.

What You’ll Learn:

Surface Control: Master the art of creating glazes with different finishes—from matte to satin to high gloss.

Color Variations: Experiment with colorants and learn how to incorporate them into your glazes to add vibrancy and depth to your pieces.

Mixing Techniques: Learn the essentials of mixing glaze batches, using volumetric blending to create multiple variations from just a few small batches.

Advanced Glaze Development: Create up to 25 unique glaze variations by blending just four small batches, giving you greater flexibility and efficiency in glaze-making.

Understanding Chemistry: Dive deep into the role of key chemical elements in glazes and understand how they influence the final surface and texture.

Practical Tools: Learn how to interpret glaze formulas using the Unity Formula and Stull Diagram to predict and control the outcome of your glazes.

Class Details:

Limited Enrollment: To ensure a personalized learning experience, this class is limited to 8 students.

Class Materials: You will need to bring a respirator with appropriate filters (a requirement for safely mixing glazes). If you don’t have one, a recommended model will be provided.

Focus on Development: This class is dedicated entirely to the process of glaze development. Please note that it does not cover glaze application or decorative techniques—our focus is on creating the perfect glaze formula and learning the chemistry behind it.

John Post

John Post

John Post is a retired K-12 art teacher whose focus in the classroom was clay and painting. He holds a Master of Arts in Ceramics from Wayne State University in Detroit. He also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in sculpture from Wayne State University. In retirement, he works on creating functional pottery fired to cone 10 in his gas kiln in Sedona, Arizona. His favorite part of the pottery-making process is creating new glazes.

Tools & Equipment:

Please note that purchasing a respirator is a class requirement. A respirator for dust is necessary for glaze mixing (please have it ready for the first class). If you already have a respirator, you’re welcome to use it; otherwise, I’ll recommend one for you.

The first link is for the respirator and the second link is for the filters that fit onto it. I like this respirator because it comes in small, medium, and large. Make sure you select your size at the respirator mask link when you order both of these items.

Materials & Safety:

Please ensure you have your respirator with filters at the first class, as we will begin mixing glazes on day one.

**For the safety of everyone, no one will be permitted to stay inside the class without a respirator.
