Mimi Damrauer is an award winning paper collage artist and instructor from Phoenix, AZ. She combines painting, stitching, drawing & collage to create, modern, one-of-a-kind artworks. She considers her wobbly designs to be Outsider Art which has a primitive folk art feel.
Growing up with a very creative mother and sisters meant that art projects, cooking and entertaining were a constant. Mimi’s love of people, art, and fun led to a career in Chicago in Special Events and a spot on the art fair circuit across the country selling her vibrant textile and now paper collage artworks to collectors everywhere.
A collaboration with retailer Crate and Barrel resulted in the fall 2008 debut of the best- selling “Sebastian” rug at Crate and Barrel retail stores nationwide and internationally via the Crate and Barrel website.
Mimi’s art classes are a place to have fun and learn simple techniques that will be a foundation for you to build upon in your own art journey. She teaches varied workshops at her cute studio space in Phoenix and other local art schools. She can also be shipped in to your own location!
Mimi will provide everything that you need in class. However, it’s fun to bring a few things from around your studio space or home to use…this will make your collage papers more personal and one of a kind. No need to buy these items. This is an opportunity to come to class and try new things out!
The only item Mimi recommends, if you think you might use them again, is a watercolor set from Kuretake. They are beautiful and make gorgeous marks. Mimi recommends the Gansi Tambi 48 Color Set which you can purchase on Amazon for $46.
Below are extra items that you can pack up for class…
3 Paint Brushes (Different sizes and tip shapes)
Any other favorite paint brushes (Mimi usually use about 6-10 per painting session)
Household Items to use as stamps:
Caps/Lids (Lipstick Caps, Food Jar Lids)
Stencils (you will need at least 2-3 for the coffee dyeing to fill up a cookie sheet pan)
Misc. things that can make marks or stamps (Sticks and a few rubber stamps that you like)
Papers (Mimi will have a nice pile for you also)
Book pages (an old book you don’t mind “upcycling” and want to embellish)

She is a joy (and very easy!) to work with, an amazing instructor, and her students love her classes. We are very fortunate to have her in our Holland Center family and everyone is looking forward to what she has planned for this fall!

Mimi’s class was so much fun! I had no idea that I was going to enjoy making paper and collages as much as I have. I’ve already taken two workshops and can’t wait to sign up for a third!
