Learn to make beautiful one-of-a-kind collage papers using acrylic paints and a gel plate.  Mimi will walk the class through a very fun and easy process of gel painting and printing.  Even if you have done some Gel Painting before, Mimi will teach you all of her tips and tricks to add to your repertoire so that you get polished results with a simple process!

Day One: Basics of Gel Mono Printing/Painting.

  • Mimi will walk students through the gel mono printing process.  You will create a great pile of amazing papers to use later.
  • Learn how to create designs using a variety of texture tools.
  • How to make Masks & Stencils to give your papers your own unique style.
  • How to finish papers that are “almost done” with Top Painting and Mark Making.
  • How to Gel Print/Paint onto various types and weights of papers.
  • Going BIG…Work on a larger gel plate to create a whole new cache of papers in the afternoon.  Build on the techniques that you learned in the morning.  You will be amazed at how different and complex your papers will be on a larger format.

Day Two:  Let’s make stuff!

  • Mimi will show you how to create a 12” x 12” art collage on paper using your new collage papers.
  • Learn different ways to adhere papers in a collage using different glues and tapes.
  • How to take your design idea and transform it into a real artwork.
  • How to make templates.
  • How to work in an art series.
  • Other small projects to use your papers: Notecards, Gift Tags and Washi Decorative Tapes.

Then take home all of your leftover papers, masks, and stencils to use in other projects.  You will have a fabulous stash!

Mimi Damrauer

Mimi Damrauer is an award winning paper collage artist and instructor from Phoenix, AZ.  She combines painting, stitching, drawing & collage to create, modern, one-of-a-kind artworks.  She considers her wobbly designs to be Outsider Art which has a primitive folk art feel.

Growing up with a very creative mother and sisters meant that art projects, cooking and entertaining were a constant.  Mimi’s love of people, art, and fun led to a career in Chicago in Special Events and a spot on the art fair circuit across the country selling her vibrant textile and now paper collage artworks to collectors everywhere.

A collaboration with retailer Crate and Barrel resulted in the fall 2008 debut of the best- selling “Sebastian” rug at Crate and Barrel retail stores nationwide and internationally via the Crate and Barrel website.

Mimi’s art classes are a place to have fun and learn simple techniques that will be a foundation for you to build upon in your own art journey. She teaches varied workshops at her cute studio space in Phoenix and other local art schools.  She can also be shipped in to your own location!

Mimi will provide everything that you need in class.  However, it’s fun to bring a few things from around your studio space or home to use…this will make your collage papers more personal and one of a kind.  Please DO NOT BUY ANYTHING!  Mimi wants you to come to class to try new things out. If you love what we do, then purchase away!

“When you meet Mimi for the first time, you are instantly drawn to her bubbly personality and creative energy. She is a joy (and very easy!) to work with, an amazing instructor, and her students love her classes. We are very fortunate to have her in our Holland Center family and everyone is looking forward to what she has planned for this fall!

Lisa Matthews, Student

Mimi’s class was so much fun! I had no idea that I was going to enjoy making paper and collages as much as I have. I’ve already taken two workshops and can’t wait to sign up for a third!
