Lynn Haygood Lee
Lynn Haygood Lee is a painter in Sedona, Arizona. "I am interested in immersing directly into a work, not simply using visual perception, and experiencing in that moment of looking and questioning what I think I know. I work in series that explore how I see and experience the physical and non-physical worlds: landscapes and natural forms, objects and non-objects, and languages and symbols that are used to communicate consciously and subconsciously. Acrylic, enamel and drawing media are used on canvas, wood and paper in layering processes that obscure and reveal and examine history, time and impermanence. My current focus utilizes the vertical line and shape in visual tensions of color and light, combined with the physical sensations and non-tangible aspects of silence, freedom and space of native elements in the canyon environments surrounding Sedona and the nearby Grand Canyon." Lee began painting in 2017 when she moved to Sedona from California. She took oil and acrylic painting classes at the Sedona Arts Center in 2018 and then mentored with two Arizona and New Mexico artist-teachers. Her practice is daily painting, study and working in her studio overlooking juniper, pinon, vibrant red rocks and western skies to the horizon. She has created numerous series in non-representational themes, abstract figurative and landscape, and mixed media abstract constructions with Sedona's red earth for natural color and texture. "I was always interested in drawing but my journey to painting was serendipitous. I am inspired by change. Through family and life, I have been a nomad in beautiful communities throughout the U.S. and this reflects in my work as I challenge myself and question what art and painting can be." Works show regularly in national and international juried exhibitions and are in private collections in the U.S. In 2024 work has been invited in six national museum group exhibitions. Lee is a member of American Women Artists, International Society of Experimental Artists, Oceanside Museum of Art Artist Alliance, Sedona Arts Center, Arizona Artists Guild, Tubac Center of the Arts, and Sedona Visual Artists' Coalition. Works in the Caravan series can be seen in the Fine Art Gallery at Sedona Arts Center. Lee recently completed the 2024 Winter/Spring Residency program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
