Description

Centered: Beginner Wheel Throwing for Teens Aged 13-18
Discover the fun of clay and wheel throwing in a supportive, creative environment

Wednesdays | 4:30 pm–7:30 pm | 6 Instructor-Led Class Sessions + 6 Open Studio Practice Sessions

This class is designed especially for teens who are new to the pottery wheel or have minimal experience. You’ll learn the foundational techniques of wheel throwing—like centering clay, shaping forms, and trimming—to create your own bowls, mugs, and other pottery pieces. No prior experience needed—just curiosity and a willingness to get a little messy!

What You’ll Experience:

  • Foundational Skills: Learn essential wheel-throwing techniques with step-by-step instruction, including centering, pulling walls, and trimming finished forms.
  • Creative Expression: Explore decorating techniques such as texture, colored slip, and glaze application. You’ll finish your work with beautiful, food-safe glazes.
  • Hands-On Learning: Each class includes instructor demonstrations, guided practice, and plenty of time on the wheel. Plus, open studio sessions give you extra time to explore and improve your skills.

Class Highlights:

  • Just for Teens: Tailored instruction for ages 13–18 in a relaxed, fun atmosphere that encourages creativity and self-expression.
  • Supportive Environment: Small class sizes mean individual guidance, whether you’re brand new or building on what you already know.

As someone with a case of tactile munchies, Lo is passionate about introducing students to the medium of clay, the joy and possibilities of creating with it. Her favorite tool is the potter’s wheel. Lo has a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and encourages discovery-based learning methods.  As a Licensed Massage Therapist, she brings a kinesthetic sensitivity to her teaching, helping students connect physically with the medium. Lo gained her understanding of ceramic processes and materials at Yavapai College through both coursework and employment as a studio technician, mentor ceramists, workshops, and hands on experience. In 2019 she took a class at SAC and has been involved in their ceramics department ever since. Outside of teaching, you will find her tending to studio needs, making and practicing atmospheric firings at Reitz Ranch Center for the Ceramic Arts, as well as continuing her education in bodywork/massage therapy.
