  • Materials Fee: $70 paid directly to instructor for some supplies on the first day of the first workshop.
  • Location: Sedona Arts Center, Theatre Studio.

Day 1: Whatever your relationship is to picture making – beginner, intermediate or advanced  –  having the option to incorporate encaustic into your art practice is essential. Come dip into the world of working with hot, molten beeswax paint in this fast moving workshop. Perfect also as a refresher course, we will establish good painting practices with understanding fusing, laying medium, encaustic “friends”, building texture and more.  Class time will be divided between demonstrations and individual work time. Proper studio ventilation, wax safety, and how to “finish” artworks in terms of framing and care will also be touched upon. Students will leave with a couple of finished pieces and be recharged by this dynamic workshop.

Days 2-3: Using materials of encaustic, free writing exercises, and individual “meetings”, participants will expand, explore and develop their studio practice. Whilst exploring the hows and whys we need to explore art-making, students will also be lead through  technical demonstrations specific to encaustic. Encaustic, by its fluid nature and textural capacities, will give participants a capacity to “play” and can expand upon their own practices which may stretch into three dimensional forms, integrates photography, poetic, literal and other capacities. Fundamental techniques, mark making, mixed media, layer building, transparency / opacity will also be covered.  Students will leave with a handful of finished pieces, a path forward, and inspired.

$70 additional fee paid to the instructor on the first day for materials she provides.  See more information about materials students need to bring to the workshop by clicking the Materials List tab above.
