Tom Lynch

Tom Lynch

Tom has been referred to as one of the nation’s premier watercolorists. He has written 7 books and hosted several award winning PBS TV Art Series. He was recently listed as one of the nation’s top 20 teachers by a leading Art magazine. He is represented by some of the nation’s leading museums and art galleries. He has been the spokesperson for the entire National Art Materials Trade Association, and continues to be the international spokesperson for many leading art material manufacturers. Tom is currently featured on the new cable TV channel Visual Arts Network, and in 2007 he became the CMO and featured artist for Art Academy Live (the leading on-line education source).

With his uniquely styled landscape paintings, he strives for a level of excitement, movement and resonance that seems to push somewhere beyond what the environment naturally provides.

When considering subjects he tries to search for something striking; like the color of the sky, the direction of natural light, pattern of shadows, or the glint of sunlight on water. He then embellishes those striking features.

Lynch hopes that by accentuating those things that are sometimes easy to miss, he can provoke viewers to … “Have something to think about, not just something to see”. Each painting Tom creates can be seen as special. “I feel it’s the job of the artist to bring to the viewer the best of what can be found in the landscape along with a little creativity or exaggeration … normal and ordinary are not for me.”

HELLO CLASS,

THANK YOU FOR JOINING ME FOR AN ONLINE :   1- day Watercolor Workshop,

“Painting A Southwest Landscape in Watercolor”

You can use one of my examples that I will be sending you, or your own composition:

Here are a few details for the class you signed up for:

The format for the class is as follows:

The lessons are comprehensive and will last you a lifetime.  You will see me demonstrate and then have plenty of time to practice under my watchful eye.

You can sketch the same example I will be demonstrating  [ or a different version that I will send later ] or your own composition on 300# paper. I want to give you a way that this painting can be your own and not just a copy of mine. Either way it will be a fun learning experience with information you can use for a lifetime!

Most students paint a 11×15 size. I will explain in detail each technique for each stage, demonstrate it, then allow you time to paint/practice under my watchful eye and I can answer all your questions. I can even show you other paintings from my studio using this technique. In the morning session we will paint the parts of the landscape on separate sheets of 140# paper in different ways. In the afternoon session we create a finished painting in a step by step fashion.

…There is a added bonus..  You can send me questions and photos of your efforts up to 4 weeks after class. This takes the pressure off of having to show me your efforts in class. Maybe you don’t want to paint as fast as I do, or you may want to practice again later and then you will have a new question or need help. I will still be there for you.

…Sketches   I will send you all the sketches to have ready LATER. They are easy to replicate.

…Materials There are only a few extra items that will help you get the most out of your class with me.

PAINT:   these few colors will make a big difference in the sunlight, shadow, focal point, and darks that I will be showcasing

Sennelier   …add these colors to your palette if you can:

  • Blue Indanthrene  [for colorful dark NIGHT SKIES ]
  • Lemon Yellow  [ FOCAL POINT ]
  • Opera Rose   [ focal point ]
  • Phthalo Blue [ rich NIGHT shadows ]
  • Phthalo Green Light [ focal point ]

PAPER:  There is a difference between papers and I recommend Fabriano ‘ extra white ‘ ARTISTICO .This watercolor paper will not allow the paint to soak in too deep or too fast. It will also allow for easy removal of dry color and you can repaint where you have removed dry color. You can paint on either side. In the past I used GEMINI watercolor paper. It is not as white, it will soon be discontinued, and you have to use the front ONLY.  For the first session [wed.] I will use several- 1/4 sheets [ 11×15 ] of 140# weight watercolor paper

ALL OF THE ABOVE SUPPLIES YOU CAN GET at your local art supply store…except:

DOT BOTTLES you can buy online at

https://www.artacademylive.com/monthly_specials.cfm

DOT BOTTLES… These are custom made bottles that I load with the same colors in my palette.  I recommend you to have at least 8 of them. [ I use one for every color ]. The unique feature is that when you ‘tap’ them, color will come out in a DOT pattern, which I use to paint many items. Watch the free video on how I use them to create many different items and to soften edges.  You do not have to be a member to buy from them... they, [ art academy ] just help out those of us who do not have a paypal system linked to their website. I will be using the FINE MIST TOP often.

I have listed below SEVERAL video links to watch that might be helpful before class.

My website has a full list of the other art supplies I use like..

BRUSHES: I use brushes that are SABLE and have an extra length out both for the Flats and Rounds. The sizes are  3/4 Full flat 1/4 Full flat… #8 -LINER and a #16 Designer Round. Sable brushes are hard to find and difficult to obtain in the U.S.  I will explain in class why that is so and tell you how they make such a difference.

Liquid Frisket: Incredible White Mask/ Mask  pen…HB LED pencil/ Sketch and Wash pencil: for sketching… Porcelain Palette…old cloth towels , sponges , tall water bucket,

There is a full list of supplies on my website:

https://www.tomlynch.com/supplies_workshop.cfm

Before class I will send you the sketches that you can have ready in time for class. They are easy to replicate and do not have to be exact.  I want this to be fun and informative.

Remember it is not about copying this painting, it’s about learning how to create GREAT ART with this as the subject matter.

Work on getting your paper, paint and DOT bottles for now.

Tom, As to your teaching method/delivery mode during these video sessions. One thing I noted; you talk about what you are doing as you are doing it. This is rare among artists. Artists are operating through their creative brains (usually identified as the right hemisphere) and to talk they need to shift to the logical hemisphere (usually the left) and that takes them out of the moment. You manage to communicate and create. Bravo! And you explain why you do things. Too often instructors just "do it". Seeing and hearing what you are doing is such a gift to learners. Another key component is your easy going manner. You take your time and explain. You encourage. You relate. So after the session, the learner feels like you are their personal friend. That is such a blessing (especially in this time of pandemic isolation). And leaving the video up for a few days is a real gift, also. You pack so much wonderful material in each session, that I am literally and physically exhausted by the end of the session. Having a few days to go back and listen again, and so the activities is wonderful.

I LOVED the class! The information was introduced, explained, and demonstrated extremely well! I liked that you could get in close so we could see everything that you were doing! When I am in a painting class, I am usually SO FAR behind everyone, cause I don't work that fast. This format is perfect for me! I can go over what was taught in the live class, can stop it where I don't understand and watch again, and can do multiple practices still with the instruction of the video! SO COOL!!!! I wish we had a few more days to work with the demo., but I don't have anything important to do the next 2 days, so this week, I have the time to really practice! Thank you for being such a conscientious and generous teacher!

Thanks so much for a GREAT class. You are doing an AMAZING job of reaching out across the virtual medium and engaging with the students. I have done several other virtual workshops in recent months, but what you are doing is light years ahead. It’s the way you call people out so they can’t hide in silence. And your mastery of the multiple cameras. As someone whose professional life has required hundreds and hundreds of hours of Zoom meetings since the shut-down, I really have a deep understanding of how special what you are doing is And, you are doing a GREAT job of handling the technical issues along the way. That feedback loop today with the husband and wife team was because they had two microphones and/or speakers active in the same room. One of them has to stay muted while the other mic/speaker is live. I’m so impressed with your ability to articulate what you are doing. So many artists can’t both talk and paint at once. No fault of theirs. It’s a left brain/right brain thing.

Thanks so much for a great week of painting. I knew you were knowledgeable and I came to learn new things and I did. Your generosity was an unexpected bonus. I have never been in a workshop where the teacher shared so much! Pam

The workshop was fantastic, the best ever. I immensely enjoyed watching you paint those beautiful paintings and showing and teaching us your process. I learned so much. The Live Videos in the morning and the Zooms in the afternoon worked out great for me. I love seeing everything so close up, especially when you zoomed in. And, it was great to have a day off in between to practice. Thanks again, FROM EDWINA
