It’s the Little Things: Painting Small Wonders
with Jillian Sanders

Saturday and Sunday  Nov. 2 – 3, 2024 | 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

In this workshop students will be encouraged to forget about the big picture and instead focus on capturing the little things that spark joy: a hot cup of tea steaming on a windowsill, a favorite locket or lipstick, an old stuffed animal that passed through generations of little hands. The things we hold close in our hearts are so often taken for granted, so let’s take the time to honor them in paint! This workshop will delve into capturing light through color, framing and focus, and mastering the essential strokes when approaching a miniature still life.

Jillian Sander

Jillian Sander is a crafter of whimsy and life’s fantastical little wonders. Jillian is a multimedia artist with a focus in illustration, painting, and fiber sculpture. Though her practice is multi-faceted, she finds that her themes stay constant, and she spends much of her time exploring the depths of imagination. Often, she discovers there’s magic to be found all around her! Jillian is constantly amazed by the intricacies of the natural world, and spends much of her time researching flora and fauna and adventuring in the great outdoors to get up close and personal, and oftentimes a little muddy. Jillian earned her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and currently resides in Flagstaff, AZ, where she runs her business, The Crafty Critter. Her work has traversed multiple anthologies, galleries, businesses, publications, murals, screenings, and fests, and she has taught workshops and classes of all sorts. She is pleased as punch to be bringing her expertise to the lovely community of Sedona.

Sarah

Jillian is by far the most patient teacher I've ever had. She knows exactly how to lead without introducing any pressure or self-doubt. She models excellence in her craft without making you as the student feel inferior or overwhelmed. She didn't just show me what the end product should look like, but taught me the language of the art so that I could confidently achieve a beautiful end product independently. To teach high level artistic skills while keeping the environment relaxed, fun, and playful is an incredible feat. With Jillian as a teacher you will feel both inspired and capable, motivated and relaxed. I truly can't recommend her classes more.

Holly

Jillian has a natural ability to make meaningful connections with her students, taking a genuine interest in the person. Her interest and dedication to her students motivates them to excel, and her ability to teach multiple generations was an incredible asset to the school. Jillian could identify her student’s strengths, building on them, encouraging them to grow and succeed. She creates an atmosphere that celebrates trying new things. Jillian has a way of bringing a sense of calm and confidence to her teaching space, making each and every student feel welcome, valued, and heard. Jillian is hard working, her enthusiasm is contagious, and her ideas and ability to think outside of the box are endless.

John

Her use of mixed mediums and her incredible imagination is something I admire in her as an artist and the pieces she created brought joy.... Jillian has the experience to create an inclusive and engaging learning environment. She is someone that finds uniqueness in the individual artistic process and would be accepting and supportive with students who have various backgrounds and talents. As a leader, she will be able to nurture and highlight her students and motivate them to express themselves at their highest level.

Jarad

As a cartoonist myself, I enjoy Jillian’s cartooning work, but especially her ability to translate it with a variety of media. Seeing her voice creatively represented not only in comics, but as murals, sculptures, paintings, and puppets is an absolute delight(...). Students would be very lucky to work under her guidance.
