This workshop will focus on enhancing the artists’ knowledge and landscape painting skills in gouache. Deepen your understanding of the medium, from its unique properties to essential tools including supports, brushes and mediums. We will explore key aspects of compositions and color strategies to harness the full potential of gouache. Instructor demos will help you grasp the techniques behind crafting vibrant engaging paintings. There will be plein air set-ups provided for hands on experimentation. Whether working from Sedona photo references or your own inspiration, you will receive personalized guidance to build confidence in using gouache outdoors or in your studio practice.

Lili Anne Laurin

Lili Laurin’s western landscape paintings reflect the glow and dramatic light that are iconic of the Arizona landscape. An avid plein air artist, she is often out at the crack of dawn, on site and ready to capture the sunbathed scene of gorgeous early morning light. Without faithful adherence to regular plein air excursions, her studio effort could not reflect the knowledge gained from that important experience. She applies her hard earned knowledge to her larger works. Lili makes several yearly excursions to paint at the Grand Canyon, which is one of the most complex challenging landscape scenes to distill onto a canvas. Another favorite subject of this landlocked artist is seascapes, so there are plans this year to travel to the California Coast.

Ms. Laurin is regularly invited into prestigious national juried exhibitions and is he recipient of many awards including the Southwest Art Award of Excellence and the honorific Tucson Desert Art Museum Purchase Award for her painting of Lee’s Ferry Landing, an almost dreamlike interpretation of a peaceful section of the Colorado River in Glen Canyon. She most recently garnered the Realism Award of Excellence for Opuntia at the 2023 Oil Painters of American which recently sold at the Gallery of the Sedona Art Center.

Registration

Each student must enroll individually
Students may register online or by calling the Sedona Arts Center’s Administrative Offices in the Art Barn, toll-free at 888-954-4442 or locally at 928-282-3809
Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express are accepted or student may pay with cash or check by registering in person during office hours at the Art Barn

In-Person and Online Workshops

Payment in full is due upon registration, or a payment plan can be put in place by the student upon check-out through Sezzle.
There is a $125 Cancellation Fee for any cancellations made before January 1, 2025. Remaining balance will be refunded.
There are no refunds after January 1, 2025.
If Sedona Arts Center cancels the workshop for any reason, all payments made will be refunded in full.

I met Lili in 2015 at an APAP paint out. We both wanted to explore plein out in the desert and started to meet up and do just that. Over the ensuing years we became experts at the adventure of plein air and Lili taught me so much about painting in general and composition in the field. Tangent! Her favorite warning, something I hadn't given much thought until then. When it come to plein air Lili is an expert. She knows how to plan the trip, when to get up, when to arrive there, what to pack and what to leave behind...and when to keep it or scrape it. We have painted Arizona from top to bottom, especially Sedona and the Grand Canyon. She is a natural teacher. Her classes will fill up quickly and her students will be back for more.

When I got interested in approaching the gouache medium, I immediately thought of my friend Lili Laurin. I had seen her excellent gouache paintings on Instagram and Facebook and I knew she had plenty to teach me. Just watching her demo was eye opening and very informative. I had tried watercolor before but this was completely different and her demo showed me how to manipulate the paint for maximum effect and I now love the medium Sent from my iPhone
