Friendship is one of the most fundamental and meaningful of human experiences. We see this in the many diverse forms that amiable companionship takes, ranging from intimate bonds to playful camaraderie, to relationships based on shared philosophy or political solidarity. This lecture explores how artists throughout history have depicted these varied expressions of friendship, revealing much about the societies they lived in and our ever-evolving understanding of interpersonal connection.
