Exploring Glazes is an advanced course that builds on foundational glaze-making skills, perfect for those who’ve completed Understanding Glazes and are eager to experiment further. You’ll refine your technical knowledge, troubleshoot common issues, and gain the skills to customize glazes to suit your unique artistic style. Unlock new surface qualities and learn to bring your vision to life with the science of glaze development.
*Prerequisite: Completion of Understanding Glazes
What You’ll Learn:
Surface Control: Master the art of creating glazes with different finishes—from matte to satin to high gloss.
Color Variations: Experiment with colorants and learn how to incorporate them into your glazes to add vibrancy and depth to your pieces.
Mixing Techniques: Learn the essentials of mixing glaze batches, using volumetric blending to create multiple variations from just a few small batches.
Advanced Glaze Development: Create up to 25 unique glaze variations by blending just four small batches, giving you greater flexibility and efficiency in glaze-making.
Understanding Chemistry: Dive deep into the role of key chemical elements in glazes and understand how they influence the final surface and texture.
Practical Tools: Learn how to interpret glaze formulas using the Unity Formula and Stull Diagram to predict and control the outcome of your glazes.
Class Details:
Limited Enrollment: To ensure a personalized learning experience, this class is limited to 8 students.
Class Materials: You will need to bring a respirator with appropriate filters (a requirement for safely mixing glazes). If you don’t have one, a recommended model will be provided.
Focus on Development: This class is dedicated entirely to the process of glaze development. Please note that it does not cover glaze application or decorative techniques—our focus is on creating the perfect glaze formula and learning the chemistry behind it.
