While much has been written about Max Ernst’s interest in Native American art and culture and its influence upon his artwork, little has been understood about any such influence on the art of Dorothea Tanning during her formative years in Sedona. Mark will show a clip of a short video about Tanning and share stories about Max and Dorthea’s experiences in Sedona at Capricorn Hill.

Marie Difilippantonio’s four volume book series with co-author Beth Gates Warren titled Julien Levy: The Man, His Gallery, His Legacy, will be released in December of this year.  Julien Levy (1906–1981) is best remembered as the art dealer who brought Surrealism to the United States.  Marie will talk about Julien Levy, his gallery, and provide an overview of the 22 women artists he exhibited in his gallery. The Julien Levy Gallery gave the first solo exhibitions for a number of historically important artists including Frida Kahlo, Dorothea Tanning, and Leonor Fini and also represented Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning’s surrealist work from Sedona during the 1940’s.
