Glass-on Glass Mosaic with Sonja London-Hall

Tuesdays, Feb 2, 9, 16, 2027, 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

 

This evening class, for beginners to intermediate students, will teach students the intricate art of glass-on-glass (GOG) mosaics. Over three consecutive evenings, participants will discover how transparency, light, and color interact by creating a beautiful, light-catching art piece. By utilizing clear glass substrates and specialized transparent adhesives, this course offers the radiant aesthetic of traditional stained glass but uses accessible mosaic techniques. The final product will be an 8″ x 10″ or 10″ x 14″ transparent glass mosaic panel ready to hang in a window.

Evening 1: Design, Safety & The First Cut
Focus: Mastering the tools and laying the structural groundwork

  • Welcome and studio safety orientation covering proper glass handling, nipping techniques, and flying splinter containment.
  • Reviewing design ideas and transferring templates onto the clear glass substrate.
  • Hands-on practice with wheeled nippers where students begin cutting and gluing their outer border and primary design elements, learning application techniques to avoid messy adhesive bleed-through.

Evening 2: Precision Fitting & Composition
Focus: Developing the internal pattern and completing the layout.

  • Brief check-in to address alignment issues or sliding pieces from the night before.
  • Intensive studio time with instructor guidance on choosing complimentary colors and cutting shapes that minimize wide gaps. Students focus on the relationship between overlapping glass tones and passing light.
  • Final inspection to ensure all glass pieces are firmly adhered so the panel can handle the mechanical pressure of grouting the following day.

Evening 3: The Grouting Transformation
Focus: Finishing the artwork and learning clean-up protocols.

  • Grouting demonstration covering mixing consistency, application, and how to safely pack gaps without scratching the stained glass.
  • Hands-on application where students mix and apply grout to their panels.
  • Haze clean-up phase where students carefully sponge away excess grout, polish their glass surfaces, and reveal the vibrant, translucent colors.
  • Photo session, care instructions (displaying in direct sunlight, moisture safety), and workshop wrap-up.

Required Materials & Tools

A $65 Materials Fee needs to be paid to the instructor, prior to the start of class.

The materials included in the fee:

 Substrates: High-quality clear glass panels (or repurposed framed windows).
 Tesserae: A vibrant assortment of transparent and semi-transparent stained glass remnants.
 Adhesives: Premium clear drying adhesive (such as E6000 or No Days Mosaic Adhesive).
 Tools: Wheeled glass nippers, running pliers, glass scorers, and safety glasses.
 Finishing: Light or neutral grout, mixing bowls, nitrile gloves, and sponges.

Registration and Cancellation Policies

Registration

  • Each student must enroll individually.
  • Classes must be paid in full upon registration.
  • Students may register online or by calling the Sedona Arts Center’s Office at 928-282-3809, ext 1.
  • Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express are accepted or student may pay with cash or check by registering in person during office hours, 9 am – 5 pm, Mon – Fri.

In-Person and Online Classes Cancellation

  • Students must cancel or transfer at least 7 days prior to the first day of class.
  • If a student cancels or transfers before the 7-day cut-off, a 15% fee will be applied.
  • If a student cancels within 7 days prior to class, there are no refunds.
  • If Sedona Arts Center cancels the class for any reason, all payments made will be refunded in full.

Note: If traveling to Sedona, we strongly urge students to purchase refundable airline tickets or travel insurance in case of workshop cancellation due to insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen changes. Sedona Arts Center is not responsible for non-refundable ticket purchases or lodging fees.

Important Message

The Sedona Arts Center is not responsible for providing make-up sessions or issuing refunds, credits, or transfers for courses missed as a result of illness, emergencies, or other events beyond our control. There are absolutely no refunds after the cut-off date for any reason, unless the Sedona Arts Center has to cancel the workshop, then all fees paid will be refunded in full.
