Special Topics: From Slab to Form: Building with Templates with Christine Golden

Discover the versatility of slab construction in this hands-on course designed for ceramic artists of all skill levels. Using templates as a guide, students will learn how to create precise, repeatable forms while exploring the unique possibilities of soft and firm slab construction. From functional pottery to sculptural works, this class will provide the foundation needed to design and build refined ceramic pieces with confidence.

Template Design & Use: Learn how to create and modify templates to build consistent ceramic forms with clean lines and structured designs.
Slab Construction Techniques: Explore soft slab and firm slab building methods, gaining control over shaping, joining, and refining surfaces.
Surface Decoration & Texture: Experiment with various surface treatments, including stamps, carving, and slip decoration, to enhance your forms.
Form & Function: Develop pieces that balance aesthetics and utility, whether you’re making functional pottery, decorative objects, or sculptural works.

Included Materials: Tuition includes a 25-pound bag of clay, glazes, firings, and access to one open studio session per week.
Optional Pottery Tools: 9-piece tool kits are available in the studio for $15 (purchase optional).

Ceramics classes are designed for persons aged 16 and over, or with instructor approval.

Christine Golden
Christine attained her BFA at the University of Utah in 2005, where she was a National Research Fellow. In 2010 she received her MFA from Indiana University, where she became an associate professor. During her professional career, Christine has participated in numerous residencies and visiting artist programs, such as Penland School of Arts, Vermont Studio Center, and LH Project. For over 20 years, Christine acquired an eclectic teaching experience through classes and workshops taught at Universities and community centers throughout the country. Christine received the Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics, and has curatorial experience with galleries and museums. She has exhibited her artwork at venues like the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center, NY. Art making has continued to be an integral part of her life, after a brief hiatus to create her family, Christine has begun teaching and exhibiting again.
First bag of clay included. Additional bags of clay may be purchased during class for $40 per bag which includes glazing & firing fees. Enrolled students may also participate in one open studio practice session per week.
Pottery Tools – There are 9-piece tool kits available for purchase in the Ceramics Studio for $15 per kit. Purchase of the tool kit is not required to take the class.

Registration
Each student must enroll individually.
Classes must be paid in full upon registration.
Students may register online or call Sedona Arts Center Office at 928-282-3809, Ext 1 or toll free at 866-282-3809 Ext 1.
Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express are accepted or student may pay with cash or check by registering in person during office hours Monday – Friday, 9 am – 5 pm.
In-Person and Online Classes Cancellation
Students must cancel or transfer at least 7 days prior to the first day of class.
If a student cancels or transfers before the 7-day cut-off, a 15% fee will be applied.
If a student cancels within 7 days prior to class, there are no refunds.
If Sedona Arts Center cancels the class for any reason, all payments made will be refunded in full.
Note: If traveling to Sedona, we strongly urge students to purchase refundable airline tickets or travel insurance in case of workshop cancellation due to insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen changes. Sedona Arts Center is not responsible for non-refundable ticket purchases or lodging fees.
Important Message
Sedona Arts Center is not responsible for providing make-up sessions or issuing refunds, credits, or transfers for courses missed as a result of illness, emergencies, or other events beyond our control. There are absolutely no refunds after the cut-off date for any reason, unless Sedona Arts Center has to cancel the workshop, then all fees paid will be refunded in full.
