Sedona Arts Center presents “Joella Jean Mahoney: A Retrospective & Sale,” opening May 1, 2024. The exhibition will span the career of contemporary American painter and long-time Sedona resident Joella Jean Mahoney, who passed away in 2017, and is conceived to celebrate her art, life and legacy.

Showcasing the range and depth of her work, the exhibition comprises paintings from her archives. Known for her dramatic and luminescent large-scale landscapes, Mahoney’s work reveals the human connection to place. The artist’s distinctive style, a fusion of realism and abstraction, uses color and structure to reflect the emotional and spiritual soul of the Southwest. The characteristics of her work—spontaneous brush strokes, inventive shapes, lambent color and monumental scale—are defining hallmarks. While she also painted flowers and figures, the Colorado Plateau was a major subject in her oeuvre.
