Nathan Garcia a contemporary queer artist based in Gilbert, Arizona studying Photography at ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. His practice resides in alternative portraiture, ranging in digital work to darkroom abstract printing processes. In tandem with photography, He is also studying ceramic sculpture and anatomy sculpture. His ceramics are inspired by organic life and shapes, predominantly aquatic life. Although he is fairly new to anatomy sculpture, he plans to create work inspired by his own photography. Conceptually, Nathan’s work is drawn from his own experiences with identity, mental illness, and interpersonal relationships. Aesthetically, he is influenced by artists such as Joel Peter Witkin, Arrayah Loynd, Annie Lebovitz, and Robert Mapplethorpe. In his own words, he considers himself an artist first, and a photographer or sculpture second, as he is constantly seeking ways to create, and embark on new conceptual or experimental journeys in his work.
