Mosaic 101 with Glass and Found Objects with Sonja London-Hall

Mondays, Sept 14, 21, 28, 2026 | 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

  • Experience Level: Beginner
  • Medium: Glass
  • Materials List: $85 materials fee needs to be paid to the instructor two weeks before class begins.  Bring your own rolling nippers.
  • Registration: Each student needs to enroll individually.
  • Location: Sedona Arts Center, Art Barn building.

Discover the beauty of color, texture and contrast in this hands-on mosaic workshop. Students will explore the art of creating expressive, abstract mosaics using natural slate as a foundation. Learn how to design and construct your own tesserae (mosaic pieces) from a variety of materials, including stone, glass, and found objects. Through guided instruction, students will develop techniques for safely shaping materials, arranging compositions, and adhering pieces to create a cohesive and visually compelling surface.

By the end of the class, participants will complete a rustic, abstract mosaic artwork and leave with the skills and confidence to continue working in mosaic at home.

Mosaic Process Overview

  • Week 1: The Cut & The Cant-Introduction to smalti and traditional chopping tools, foundations & direct method. Substrate preparation and beginning the design.
  • Week 2: Texture & Play-Mastering the tile placement.
  • Week 3: The Clean & Finish-Final assembly and finishing with or without grout to preserve the glass’s natural shadow and brilliance.
