Empress Dowager Cixi served as the de facto ruler of the Quing Dynasty from 1861 until her death in 1908. The Iron Lady enjoyed dressing up, even taking on the persona of Guanyin, a Buddhist deity known for her compassion. The Lotus Sutra manuscript reads “We shall walk in the footsteps of ghosts”.
