California Fields by Carol Sewell 44J

I celebrate the natural beauty that is around us and explore how fragile it can be. My work is informed by my travels to North America’s natural wonders, my undergraduate minor in geology and my garden. My early works, in oil, simplify natural and man-made patterns and were inspired by views from airplane windows and my frequent experiences in nature. My current work, in mixed media, explores the complexities of the environment and its coexistence with man. I enjoy the challenges created by intricate perspectives and the impression left by the perfect brushstroke. My background in graphic design, marketing and communications shapes my working style, which is rhythmic, layered and direct.

Description

This piece reveals the manufactured patterns that influence our landscapes. A mathematical exercise was critical to convey the depth and volume of the fields, roads and canals. Layers of transparent colors bring life to each of the planes and provide a rich color palette to explore.
