In this class you will intentionally disrespect Safety glass of two types. Tempered glass and laminate glass. You will manipulate surfaces in order to produce remarkably complex and beautiful designs.
For our Kiln and Hammer component, the key is the firing schedule. Breaking glass is easy and fun. There is a correct and incorrect way to handle tempered glass. We will learn about this and setting up your kiln. Mica powders and creative layers are your friend and offer possibilities. You will leave with one completed dish of this type.
For our Broken and Mended process, the eye of the beholder is invited to see within the glass and contemplate both seen or imagined scenes and objects. The surface of laminate glass will be hammered and pounded. You will be guided through finding imagery in the broken surface to then retouch with stains, glass pigment, silicone gel, waxes, gold leaf, or small inclusions. The final treatment of the surface is the addition of epoxy resin to add to depth and offer structural support. The student will leave with one completed project of this type.

Sonja was excellent. I believe she went above and beyond what a typical instructor might do. I could see she spent a lot of her personal time preparing for the upcoming classes. She was always available early before class and would stay over to help in any way. She took time to understand each student's goals and did what she could to help that student achieve those goals. She made every student feel good about their accomplishments. Her training and instruction style really made me think outside of the traditional stained glass box. I’m looking forward to a level two class in the future.
Sonja’s class exceeded my expectations! She was very knowledgeable, experienced, and creative with stained glass techniques. I also found her humorous and thoughtful. She presented herself and her class with online support, goals, strategies, and was extremely prepared with materials, tools, and lesson format. A+ for Sonja!!!
