Johnny Arvizu
As a ceramic artist, I am passionate about revealing the innate organic qualities of clay through the making and firing process. My approach centers on utilizing the soda kiln to accentuate the nuanced variations of color and texture inherent in both stoneware and
porcelain clay bodies. In my functional work I aim to achieve a harmonious balance between forms that are inviting and those that are more closed off. I enjoy creating gentle curves which lead the viewer's eye to a refined edge and create an interplay between positive and negative space. The strategic placement of each piece in the kiln allows me to take advantage of the flame path, producing an expressive memory of the raw essence of clay. Ultimately, I want to inspire a sense of curiosity in those who experience my art, inviting them to inspect it more intimately and appreciate the intricacies of the vessels I create.
