Ballet Folklorico by Emily Costello QHermoso

May News

Dear Friends,

I can’t believe Memorial Day is less than two weeks away.  This has been a busy and exciting season and we are so thankful for all of you who’ve joined us for events, exhibits, workshops, classes, shopping and more.

¡Que Hermoso! – a celebration of Latinx artists continues in our Special Exhibit Gallery. This special exhibit has been a great event for us so far this month. To make this exhibit even more meaningful, we have scheduled artist and curatorial talks as well.  We have a Meet The Artists talk and reception featuring Emily Costello, Noemi Gonzalez, and Gretchen Lopez on May 17 at 4PM. And another talk and reception on May 25 at 4PM – El Metro: Art & Wayfinding in Mexico City with Cristen Crujido. The work in this exhibit is colorful, cultural and meaningful and a great way to discover the work of some amazing Arizona artists.

Sedona Arts Center’s 65th anniversary is a little over a month away.  We will be celebrating all of next year with “65” as our theme for all of our exhibits and events – more to come on that as we roll out next season.  We are kicking off our birthday with the June 7 Celebrate Sedona where will have cake and a champagne toast – as well as Big Daddy D and the Dynamites – to help us party.

Our Gallery 928 program this summer will honor our milestone with the replacement of the murals on the front of the Gallery building to reflect the history of our organization and how Sedona has grown up around us.  Gallery 928 employs high school students as apprentices to work with a master artist to create a work of public art.  Along the way these students are taught the principals of design and are given a pathway to potentially earn a living as an artist.  We partner with Yavapai college so students are awarded three credits for their participation as well as an honorarium.  We had twelve applicants to the program this year and we are in the process of determining who will work with this year’s master artist, Leo Beltran.  The mural will be dedicated at our first Celebrate Sedona in the fall.

We have a great lineup planned for next season as well.  More information on next season will be coming in June.  Stay tuned.

I hope to see you at the Arts Center soon!

Best,

Julie A. Richard
