Exploring and Developing Glazes with John Post
A comprehensive introduction to the creation and modification of ceramic glazes

Students will begin by learning how to read glaze recipes and accurately prepare liquid glaze batches. Building on this foundation, the course explores techniques for developing multiple glaze variations from a limited number of initial batches.

This class is dedicated entirely to the process of glaze development. Please note that it does not cover glaze application or decorative techniques—our focus is on creating the perfect glaze formula and learning the chemistry behind it.

John Post is a retired K-12 art teacher whose focus in the classroom was clay and painting. He holds a Master of Arts in Ceramics from Wayne State University in Detroit. He also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in sculpture from Wayne State University. In retirement, he works on creating functional pottery fired to cone 10 in his gas kiln in Sedona, Arizona. His favorite part of the pottery-making process is creating new glazes.
Tools & Equipment:
Please note that purchasing a respirator is a class requirement. A respirator for dust is necessary for glaze mixing (please have it ready for the first class). If you already have a respirator, you’re welcome to use it; otherwise, I’ll recommend one for you.
The first link is for the respirator and the second link is for the filters that fit onto it. I like this respirator because it comes in small, medium, and large. Make sure you select your size at the respirator mask link when you order both of these items.
Additional Materials: All glaze-making supplies will be provided.
Materials & Safety:
Please ensure you have your respirator with filters at the first class, as we will begin mixing glazes on day one.
**For the safety of everyone, no one will be permitted to stay inside the class without a respirator.
