Beginner to Confidence-Building Wheel Throwing with John Post
Build your confidence and refine your skills

Wednesdays | 4:30pm-7:30pm | 6 Instructor-Led Class Sessions + 6 Open Studio Practice Sessions

This class offers a welcoming and supportive environment to explore the art of wheel throwing. Designed to accommodate both true beginners and those with some wheel experience, you’ll learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing, including centering clay, shaping forms, trimming, and pulling handles to create cylinders, bowls, mugs, and plates.

What You’ll Experience:

Comprehensive Instruction: Through demonstrations and personalized, one-on-one guidance, you’ll master essential wheel-throwing techniques and gain the confidence to create both functional and decorative pottery pieces.
Creative Exploration: In addition to throwing, you’ll explore surface design methods such as slip application and glazing, and be introduced to various firing processes to complete your work.
Hands-On Practice: Participate in both instructor-led sessions and open studio practice, allowing you to apply what you’ve learned and experiment with your creative ideas.

Age Requirement:

Ceramics classes are designed for persons aged 16 and over, or with instructor approval.

John Post

John Post is a retired K-12 art teacher whose focus in the classroom was clay and painting. He holds a Master of Arts in Ceramics from Wayne State University in Detroit. He also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in sculpture from Wayne State University. In retirement, he works on creating functional pottery fired to cone 10 in his gas kiln in Sedona, Arizona. His favorite part of the pottery-making process is creating new glazes.

First bag of clay included. Additional bags of clay may be purchased during class for $40 per bag which includes glazing & firing fees. Enrolled students may also participate in one open studio session per week.

Pottery Tools – There are 9-piece tool kits available for purchase in the Ceramics Studio for $15 per kit. Purchase of the tool kit is not required to take the class.

Registration and Cancellation Policies

Registration

Each student must enroll individually.
Classes must be paid in full upon registration.
Students may register online or call Sedona Arts Center Office at 928-282-3809, Ext 1 or toll free at 866-282-3809 Ext 1.
Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express are accepted or student may pay with cash or check by registering in person during office hours Monday – Friday, 9 am – 5 pm.

In-Person and Online Classes Cancellation

Students must cancel or transfer at least 7 days prior to the first day of class.
If a student cancels or transfers before the 7-day cut-off, a 15% fee will be applied.
If a student cancels within 7 days prior to class, there are no refunds.
If Sedona Arts Center cancels the class for any reason, all payments made will be refunded in full.

Note: If traveling to Sedona, we strongly urge students to purchase refundable airline tickets or travel insurance in case of workshop cancellation due to insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen changes. Sedona Arts Center is not responsible for non-refundable ticket purchases or lodging fees.

Important Message

Sedona Arts Center is not responsible for providing make-up sessions or issuing refunds, credits, or transfers for courses missed as a result of illness, emergencies, or other events beyond our control. There are absolutely no refunds after the cut-off date for any reason, unless Sedona Arts Center has to cancel the workshop, then all fees paid will be refunded in full.
