Laura’s art draws on her interest in the long history of painting on ceramics. Ceramic painting dates back to many ancient civilizations that incorporate traditional and contemporary techniques of putting design and imagery on ceramic forms and tile.
In her current work, the subject matter that appears on her porcelain tea bowls and other forms is collections of images she finds on her daily walks. These images are digitally edited before printing them in ceramic pigments. The ceramic pigments are transferred to the porcelain surface and fired. Her collections of what she sees on the path are nonlinear remembrances. Functional, decorative pottery is an intimate craft form that inspires personal and community interaction with eyes, hands and mouth. She hopes her work can inspire those connections.
Laura Bloomenstein is a Professor of Art and runs the ceramics programs at Yavapai College in AZ. She was awarded her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, attended Kansas City Art Institute and then earned her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
