Watercolor is a popular, flexible medium, and suitable for anyone that travels and would like to capture the beauty of their surroundings. In this workshop we will explore watercolor basics, using a journaling/sketchbook approach. We’ll cover the basics of composition, value, brushwork and color relationships, experiment with color mixing and ink drawing, and finish by working with the living landscape to create sketchbook paintings that can stand on their own or serve as inspirational notes for later studio works. At the end of the workshop, you should have begun a sketchbook of your own that you can carry virtually anywhere, which will allow you to record your travels, and your progress in this medium. Suitable for beginners and more experienced painters alike.

Casey Cheuvront is an internationally collected, award-winning painter and instructor specializing in Southwestern plein air and studio works. She has been teaching for many years, and has studied drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics at CSUF California, and under some of the Southwest’s greatest living artists. Her work reveal an ongoing fascination with the Western and Southwestern wilderness, whether reflected in a local trail or a remote lake only reachable by a long backpack. Her enthusiasm is translated into a vibrant, modern palette and energetic, dynamic brushwork. Look for studio and plein air works showcasing the Yosemite highlands, Sonoran desert, and the red rocks of Sedona.

CASEY CHEUVRONT

Casey Cheuvront studied drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics at CSUF California, and has been influenced (and instructed) by current artists like Bill Cramer, Dave Santillanes, Alan Wolton, Matt Smith, Stanley Kurth, Casey Klahn, and Camille Przewodek.

Her work is informed by her ongoing plein air habit and life-long appreciation of the natural world, established through a “feet-on-the trail” connection over many years. Her outdoor education began when she was very young, while accompanying her father on long treks, fishing, hiking, bow-hunting, archery exhibitions and professional competitive archery shoots.  Later, she backpacked her way across the Sierras and the Uintas, flew California peaks in her hang glider, skied Utah powder, and mountain biked many happy trails in the Arizona desert.

Cheuvront’s pieces reveal an ongoing fascination with the Western and Southwestern wilderness, whether reflected in a local trail or a remote lake only reachable by a long backpack. Her enthusiasm is translated into a vibrant, modern palette and energetic, dynamic brushwork. Look for studio and plein air works showcasing the Yosemite highlands, Sonoran desert, and the red rocks of Sedona.

Students should bring:

Watercolor sketch journal, wire or bound, at least 90 lb paper (140lb preferred, cotton ideal) (Strathmore, Arches, Cottonwood Arts make some very nice journals; note that watercolor block is also usable but not a sketchbook per se.)

Paint: Any reasonably portable watercolor kit; student grade or better (e.g. Cotman, Winsor Newton, Sennelier)

Water and Water container (unless using brush pen) – nothing fancy here, a little cup will do

Paper towels, trash bag

Pencil, 2H, H, or HB, and sharpener, and Kneaded eraser

Brushes (smaller flats or rounds, your choice; I use both); waterbrushes are fine

Micron .3 or similar waterproof pen (e.g. Sharpie extra fine line gel)

Barb

Watercolor Wash and Ink for the Traveler gave an incredible boost to my work. For years, I’ve journaled while traveling but with disappointing results because my sketches were flat out uninteresting. I wasn’t able to develop sketches that captured lovely places and scenes that inspired me. It was implausible to travel with enough paints to create a nice painting and there was never enough time in situ. One day of Casey’s instruction taught me how put together a quick watercolor sketch with minimal supplies and then add line work that could be done in situ or later to finish it off. I now love my journal sketches, and am exploring various colors and styles as well as experimenting with similar line work on my non-journal paintings. The process is enormously fun to do. Casey is personable, a good instructor and can teach to various levels. This class is great!
