Jennifer Mercede: Permission to Play!

In this expressive painting & drawing class we will begin with mark making exercises to get you creating outside the box. Through various guided activities, we will practice letting go of the final outcome and find that art can be a process of discovery! You will learn to let your intuition guide your artistic choices as we create abstract and representational paintings in a safe, encouraging environment. While you may walk away with a piece of art ready to hang on your wall, you may also walk away with a few pieces started & ready to inspire many more hours of creating. I work and teach very organically, so be prepared to go with the flow! In this class you have permission to play.

You can expect to:

* Scribble
* Paint a lot, paint fast
* Create layers
* Use a pen
* Use text
* Use your non dominant hand
* Blind contour draw
* Doodle
* Draw from life & photographs
* Experiment with color
* Be blindfolded
* Allow yourself to:
*loosen up
*let go
*get out of your comfort zone
*make a mess

And finally, have fun!

Jennifer Mercede

Hi there! My name is Jennifer Mercede. I grew up on the east coast, yet have been living on the west for the past fifteen odd years.  I currently live in Portland, Oregon and I love it!

My art is best described as street art meets toddler art meets fine art. I love scribbling, doodling, being silly and expressive with paint, markers, crayons and/or whatever is closest and suits the mood.  My goal is to get into ‘the zone’, the flow zone, where I can forget all else and surrender to the joy of creating. I am spontaneous in my creation and I love to think on a whim in a variety of expressions, including art, music, writing and play.

I enjoy working with kids and adults alike. I teach workshops occasionally throughout the year. I love to encourage people to free up, have fun and play in their art (and life).

I have the pleasure of working with great companies such as:

Oopsy Daisy
teNeues Publishing Group

Thank you for taking the time to check out my art. Say hello! Let me know your thoughts and dreams, passions and ideas for commissioned art 😉

Materials List

$25 materials fee per student (payable to instructor on first day of workshop) provides for cradled boards in two sizes for each student. 18×24 and 10×10 as well as a variety of my favorite mark-making tools.

I encourage sharing materials in my class. I will be bringing some of mine to share. While it is definitely not expected, it is fun to provide the opportunity for each other to try something new. You might just have that something new for someone else!

Acrylic paint (any brand) 6–8 colors. Make sure you bring your favorite variation of yellow, blue, red, and white.
Paintbrushes in a variety of sizes
Some type of mark makers: colored pencils/ markers/ watercolor/crayons
Painting clothes/smock
Medium sized sketchbook: nothing fancy (we will be making quick drawings & journaling throughout the day. If you have an old and cheap sketchbook, that would be best. A handful of computer paper will work just as well.)

The following items are optional. No need to buy these items if you don’t have them.

Stick/toothpicks/kabab stick
Paint scraper/ old credit card
Painters tape
Watercolor crayons
Additional surfaces to paint on (canvas/ wood/ paper)

'Thank you, Jennifer! I feel like a whole new world has opened up to me. It's like a secret, beautiful garden with endless possibilities. Honestly, my eyes/mind see things differently now. It was a privilege to explore this new realm with such fun, funny and caring art and soul sisters! - DW Atlanta

'I found your class to be very moving and powerful in a subtle sort of way. You seem to be a doodling spiritual leader.' - WH

'Jennifer, in her kind and humorous way, taught us the art of not getting attached to what was on our canvas.' - LR

'As I participated in these exercises I had many “ah-ha” moments, like seeing my inner critic and the negative things she says. I was in a safe place where I was allowed to vocalize these thoughts and create new positive affirmations to live and create by.' -LA

'When I followed my heart’s desire, I felt SOOO good. It was like a full body smile.' - LA
