Painting Wildlife Textures
with Pamela Haunschild

Saturday-Sunday, March 7-8, 2026 | 9:30 am -4:00 pm

  • Experience Level: All Levels Welcome
  • Medium: Acrylics, Watercolor, Gouache, or Inks
  • Materials List: Click the tab above for a list of materials students need to bring with them.
  • Registration: Each student needs to enroll individually.
  • Location: Sedona Arts Center, Art Barn building.

In this workshop, we will focus on wildlife as a painting subject.  We will be using a lot of texturing techniques in both the animals themselves and the setting you might find them in.  Texture makes your paintings feel more dynamic, creates a sense of depth, and helps viewers emotionally connect with your work.  It is also a creative and relatively easy way to paint fur, feathers, and backgrounds without having to paint every detail … the textures do a lot of the work for you, as well as creating lots of interest.

You can work in the watermedia of your choice (acrylic, watercolor, acrylic ink, or gouache). We will create textures using texturing mediums along with some ordinary household materials (all texturing materials and applicators are provided).

Pamela Haunschild

Pamela Haunschild

In her artistic practice, Pam explores nature.  She goes beyond realism and provides a unique, powerful vision of her natural subjects that deepens the connection between the viewer and the natural world.  Her distinctive style is colorful, highly textured and semi-abstract, but the natural forms can still be identified.  She works in watermedia — both acrylics and watercolor.

Pam currently splits her time between Ashland and Bandon, Oregon.  Although she had a scholarship to attend art school when she was young, she went into academia instead.  After a career as social science professor at Stanford and U. Texas-Austin, Pam turned back to her first love and has been painting full time ever since.  She educated herself by taking many classes and workshops at art schools like Oregon College of Arts and Crafts and Scottsdale Art School and did extensive private study and mentorship with three well-known watermedia artists.

She has been fortunate to have been selected as artist-in-residence at three National Parks: Lassen (CA), Glacier (MT) and Lake Clark (AK) and continues to be inspired by her time there.  She is a signature member of Artists for Conservation.  She has received several private and public commissions including producing the 2019 Britt Festival playbill cover and designing and painting a 7 x 14 foot native plant mural for installation at Southern Oregon University.  Her work is held in many private and public collections, including the National Park Service.

Pam has had her work shown as part of many juried one-person and group exhibitions and has won many awards for her art.  She has been on TV and radio, and her paintings have been used in literary journals and as book covers.  She is represented by Art & Soul Gallery in Ashland, OR and Second Street Gallery in Bandon, OR.

Supply List:

I will provide the texturing mediums and materials, applicators, one pre-textured surface, and various additional materials. You bring:

  • Six (or more) surfaces of your choice. Watercolor paper (any weight), canvas, and pre-gessoed boards (like Gessobord, Claybord, or create your own) all work well. Size is up to you, but I suggest you work 11 x 14 or larger.
  • Watermedia paints of your choice. Acrylics (fluid or regular), acrylic inks, gouache, and watercolor all work well. Bring colors of your choice, but I suggest a warm and cool yellow, a warm and cool red, and two blues (one light and one dark) as a minimum. Email me at pam@pamhaunschild.com for specific color suggestions if you want.
  • Brushes you like to use. A large soft mop-type brush is useful if you have one.
  • A spray bottle, palette, and water container (larger is better). An apron and rags or paper towels.
  • Optional: if you have any favorite texturing materials like stencils, stamps, sponges, papers with raised surfaces, etc., bring them. I will have a large assortment for you to use as well.
