  • Experience Level: Advanced Beginners to Advanced.
  • Medium: Watercolor.
  • Materials: Click on the Materials List tab above for a list of supplies you will need.
  • Location: Online – you will need to have Zoom installed in your computer, and you will receive a Zoom link from Tom before the workshop takes place.

Part 1 – Practice Painting Parts:  Wed. August 2nd

The first day, you will paint ‘with ME’ parts of the scene above. You will learn how to paint: mountains, fields, trees, rocks, skies, clouds and more. I will demonstrate each part on separate sheets of paper, then allow you time to practice under my watchful eye. The beauty of this format is you don’t have to worry about a finished painting in the morning as we just practice a variety of watercolor techniques on loose sheets of 140# watercolor paper.

Part 2 – Creating a Finished Painting:  Thur. August 3rd

In the second session we will put all the parts together in a new effort and have a completed painting at the end of the day. This day you will learn the principles of focal point, value change, unity factors while you create a finished work of art. This format is great for those that want to learn in a step-by-step manner. This process will provide a comprehensive amount of information. You will receive a great foundation that then can be applied to all your future paintings. Students will be provided with; preliminary sketches and the final sketch in order to accomplish a beautiful finish painting. (You can even use your own composition!) The focus of this class is to learn while doing and I am devoted to your learning new and  successful ways to paint.

The online format allows you the ability to see the recorded demos again, while you can pause, fast forward, screen shot, your way to success. (You can even simulcast on your smart TV!)

  • I have a 3-camera presentation that will show great close-ups, the palette, and the finished painting.
  • I also have many lesson guide visuals and studio paintings to show.
  • The bonus for this online format is that the demos will be recorded – and you can watch for 3 weeks!
  • I will send you the sketches to have ready for class later. They are simple and easy to replicate.
  • There will be plenty of time for questions, and time for me to view your effort and offer suggestions. Don’t feel obligated to show your work every time, relax, have fun trying out NEW ways to paint.

Past students have said of his workshops

  • “Rather than coming out with perfect little copies of what Tom does, I came out with a wealth of watercolor techniques which I can utilize in my painting.”
  • “The best workshop I have ever had”…
  • “Never a dull moment”…
  • “Learned more in one day than I have in years”…
  • “Patient, positive and knowledgeable.”

I want you all to have a great time in this workshop and I want to motivate you to paint more and better! I will share with you all the secrets I know about painting and provide you with rich visuals to make this a great experience.

Tom Lynch

Tom Lynch

Tom has been referred to as one of the nation’s premier watercolorists. He has written 7 books and hosted several award winning PBS TV Art Series. He was recently listed as one of the nation’s top 20 teachers by a leading Art magazine. He is represented by some of the nation’s leading museums and art galleries. He has been the spokesperson for the entire National Art Materials Trade Association, and continues to be the international spokesperson for many leading art material manufacturers. Tom is currently featured on the new cable TV channel Visual Arts Network, and in 2007 he became the CMO and featured artist for Art Academy Live (the leading on-line education source).

With his uniquely styled landscape paintings, he strives for a level of excitement, movement and resonance that seems to push somewhere beyond what the environment naturally provides.

When considering subjects he tries to search for something striking; like the color of the sky, the direction of natural light, pattern of shadows, or the glint of sunlight on water. He then embellishes those striking features.

Lynch hopes that by accentuating those things that are sometimes easy to miss, he can provoke viewers to … “Have something to think about, not just something to see”. Each painting Tom creates can be seen as special. “I feel it’s the job of the artist to bring to the viewer the best of what can be found in the landscape along with a little creativity or exaggeration … normal and ordinary are not for me.”

SUPPLIES: There are only a few supplies that you will need before class starts:

‘DOT’ Spray Bottles – I make use of a custom made ‘DOT’ spray bottle (yellow top and purple neck) and a fine mist spray bottle.  They are used to create special effects for many different items, enhance the color and put “fun” into the painting process. You do not need to be a member to buy DOT bottles.

You can get these at https://www.artacademylive.com/monthly_specials.cfm

Watch this video to see a DOT bottle demo https://youtu.be/cO26-U4_W-Y

Paint – There are a few extra colors to include in your palette that make a big difference in painting sunlight; shadow; darks; and the focal point.  SENNELIER … Lemon Yellow; Phthalo Blue; Opera Rose; Phthalo Green Light; and Blue Indanthrene.  You can get these at your local art store or at https://www.artacademylive.com/monthly_specials.cfm

Paper – I will be painting on FABRIANO  Watercolor Paper  ‘Extra White’ Artistico.

Not all papers work with my spray bottle techniques; allow for easy lifting off of dry color and… have the ability to paint over that area again. (Gemini will work but will soon be discontinued; Arches will NOT work.)

For the first day, you will need 4 to 6 – 1/4 sheets 140#. For the second day, use 300# paper. I will paint on 1/4 sheets (11×15) the first day and 1/2 sheets (15×22) the second day. You can paint any size – most students paint on 1/4 sheets both days.
