The Beautiful Mess Painting Clinic
Revitalize an Unfinished Artwork

Abstract and contemporary paintings can get stuck mid-process at a frustrating stage we call the “beautiful mess.” Don’t give up on them!

In this one-day online painting clinic, you’ll be amazed to discover that your unfinished piece is most likely only a few well-placed brushstrokes away from being fabulous. Starting with what you love in your piece, Julie will train your eye to see how to enhance the depth and flow, which is key. She will demonstrate relevant critique points to illuminate what is really happening in your painting so you can bring it home to fulfilled completion.

You’ll focus on 1-2 pieces in any medium; acrylic is ideal. Attendance is limited to eight participants for plenty of one-on-one attention, plus group discussion, demonstration, and working time. Using an online class forum, you’ll post photos before and during the clinic, and will be able to receive follow-up feedback for two weeks afterward.

This workshop will take place online using ZOOM.

Julie Bernstein Engelmann

Artist Julie Bernstein Engelmann creates abstract art that speaks to the heart and spirit. Her luscious acrylic paintings have won many awards and were featured in a retrospective solo exhibition at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Pennsylvania. Educated on both coasts, Julie holds an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a BA from Barnard College in New York City, where she studied with Milton Resnick, first-generation Abstract Expressionist. Julie is passionate about teaching artists how to understand their mid-process “beautiful mess” and bring it to life through three vital qualities of powerful abstract painting: meaning, naturalness, and spatial depth and flow. In addition, Julie shares valuable expertise in color mixing to enhance visual depth. Students may register online or by calling the Sedona Arts Center’s Administrative Offices in the Art Barn, toll-free at 888-954-4442 or locally at 928-282-3809
Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express are accepted or student may pay with cash or check by registering in person during office hours at the Art Barn

In-Person and Online Workshops

A student must pay in full to save a space in the workshop
No refunds
If Sedona Arts Center cancels the workshop for any reason, all payments made will be refunded in full

Important Message

The Sedona Arts Center is not responsible for providing make-up sessions or issuing refunds, credits, or transfers for courses missed as a result of illness, emergencies, or other events beyond our control. There are absolutely no refunds after the cut-off date for any reason, unless the Sedona Arts Center has to cancel the workshop, then all fees paid will be refunded in full.
