This workshop pushes you out of your safe zone and into a brand new, looser, abstract direction drawing, painting and collaging the contemporary nude. You will learn expressive painting techniques for the modern painter. If you ever wanted to learn how to paint the freestyle abstract figure, this workshop is for you. Color is explained and explored. You will learn the 12 Design Compositions for a successful painting. Your “drawing the nude” skills are not a prerequisite.

The second day of the workshop will include working directly with the live model in a variety of poses including the nude, draped and partially draped scenarios, lots of paint sketching, gestural drawing and finger painting techniques. Be prepared to paint looser, bolder, freer, lighter and more intuitively. Plenty of time for action-filled painting exercises, demos and personalized attention. All water soluble paints are welcomed. Live modeling via Zoom with Pash

Note: This course will be delivered via Zoom online meeting platform. You will receive Zoom meeting invitations for each day.  If you don’t receive the email with the Zoom links, please contact Kate Burridge either via email at or text her at 805-459-1503 (text only – do not call.)

Kate will be assisting Bob in his studio, monitoring questions as the demonstrations and live model sessions are taking place. In the afternoon sessions when there is not a live model students will spend time working on larger, and more involved paintings in the comfort of your home studio.

There will be ample individual attention consisting of daily 1:1 personal meetings in the afternoon. Students have the option of listening in to these individual critique sessions while they paint or just painting on their own. At the conclusion of each day, students have the option to tune into 1-hour of Q&A with the instructor, talk to their cohorts, and share painting updates.

Registrants will receive a more detailed daily schedule closer to the workshop with individual meetings scheduled with each student.

Robert Burridge

In 1985 Robert Burridge turned his passion into his second career. He retired from industrial design and became a full time, contemporary fine art painter, moved to California’s Central Coast and prepared to paint the rest of his life. Today, besides painting, he is an invited juror for international art shows, a college and national painting workshop instructor, and teachs a fine art mentor program in central France. Recently selected as the Honorary President of the International Society of Acrylic Painters, he holds a signature membership with them and with the Philadelphia Watercolor Society.

His original paintings can be seen in six international galleries, on Starbucks Coffee mugs, Pearl Vodka bottles, eight tapestries and on fine art edition prints in upscale retail stores and cruise ships.

His work has received lifetime honors, including The Franklin Mint Award and recently the Philadelphia Watercolor Society’s prestigious Crest Medal Award for achievement in the arts previously awarded to Pablo Picasso, John Singer Sargent and Georgia O’Keeffe.

It is said, “Your heart doesn’t know how old you are.” For me, it’s true. Painting everyday in my small studio overlooking the Pacific Ocean, I feel like a kid again playing with color, design, paint and canvas, which reminds me of the saying, “It’s never too late to be what you always should have been.” Follow your bliss!

  • Paints
    Any professional-grade acrylic paint (no cheap, student grade paints). Your choice of colors. I will be painting with Holbein Artist Acrylic paint – colors to match my Goof-Proof Color Wheel, plus black and white. •Pyrrole Red Light •Marigold Luminous Opera •Hansa Yellow •Cad Green Deep •Compose Blue #1 •Titanium White •Ultramarine Deep •Lamp Black •Primary Magenta Note: “Color Comparison Chart” available on my website.
  • Brushes
    Acrylic/synthetic combos, 1” Flat or Round. Several 2” cheap chip bristle brushes. (hardware store) NO FOAM BRUSHES.
  • For cleaning brushes
    Murphys Oil Soap, “Original Formula.” (grocery & hardware stores) Clean your brushes at the end of the day.
  • Surfaces (all days)
    Per day you may need up to 2 Full Sheets of 140 lb. or 300 lb. CP watercolor paper, pre-gessoed (thin layer of acrylic gesso – brush or trowel on one side only, let dry) Brushmark texture is okay; do not sand smooth. Bob recommends Cheap Joe’s Kilimanjaro 140 lb. or 300 lb. CP. Optional: Also, small pre-gessoed canvases – as many per day as you want. (should fit on your painting table) No larger canvases
  • Sketch pads (day 2)
    Large Watercolor Sketch Pad, 18”x24” or 15”x20”. Bob will use Kilimanjaro Watercolor Paper, 22”x30” 300 lb and Strathmore 400 series toned Gray drawing paper – spiral paper, 9×12 or 11×14.
  • Any drawing tools are encouraged
    Such as soft charcoal, a few white pastels and black Derwent Water Soluble Drawing Pencils
  • Gesso
    One pint of thick white professional acrylic gesso. Bob uses Utrecht’s Professional Gesso —it’s thicker than most. Available from
  • Final Coat
    Water-based POLYMER VARNISH with UVLS for “sealing” all paintings – gloss, semi gloss or matte. Bob uses Minwax Polycrylic Water-Based from hardware store (You will use this after the workshop.)
  • Collage scraps
    Your own collection of collage paper scraps, such as: Old letters, music sheets, photos (make prints from a Xerox copier), fabric or any other weird stuff you need.
  • Glue for Collage Work (day 3)
    Polymer Gel Medium – gloss.
  • Small water container
    Such as a 1 gallon plastic bucket or a low 10×10 inch tupperware-type container.
  • Table covering
    Clear, 4ml plastic sheet, precut to 4 ft x 8 ft. Tape down with strong tape. (not green or blue painters’ tape)
  • Roll of VIVA towels or similar
  • Isopropyl Rubbing alcohol
  • Hand Barrier cream or Nitrile gloves
  • Artist’s Sketchbook
    Maximum size 11×17, spiral bound for note taking.

  • Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express are accepted or student may pay with cash or check by registering in person during office hours at the Art Barn

In-Person and Online Workshops

  • Payment in full is due upon registration, or a payment plan can be put in place by the student upon check-out through Sezzle.
  • There is a $125 Cancellation Fee for any cancellations made before September 14, 2022. Remaining balance will be refunded.
  • There are no refunds after September 14, 2022.
  • If Sedona Arts Center cancels the workshop for any reason, all payments made will be refunded in full

Important Message

The Sedona Arts Center is not responsible for providing make-up sessions or issuing refunds, credits, or transfers for courses missed as a result of illness, emergencies, or other events beyond our control. There are absolutely no refunds after the cut-off date for any reason, unless the Sedona Arts Center has to cancel the workshop, then all fees paid will be refunded in full.

Bob and Kate executed the virtual course so that each participant was able to clearly observe demos, see the model, and participate in the group. His demos were very helpful as was his overall advise and instruction to artists at all levels.

Bob presents ideas clearly, effectively demonstrates concepts, and does so with great zest and personal engagement. He is clearly talented and reflects a genuine concern and interest in his students.

Very clear teaching style, easy to understand, the lessons built upon one another in a logical way.

He is a really good teacher and also so kind, warm, and encouraging. It's also nice having Kate there running the technology aspects of the workshop, and fielding questions.

It was surprising to hear this was his first class via ZOOM. Went exceptionally well. Need to make sure everyone is running latest version of ZOOM.

I'd prefer being able to do this in person, but I can't think of anything they could do to make the online format better. They really have this worked out. Love having both the overhead camera and the front facing camera. Lighting and sound are good. I'm impressed.
