Description

Oil Over Acrylic Painting

with Phil Garrett

March 25 – 27, 2023 | Saturday – Monday | Sat: 10 am – 5 pm; Sun & Mon: 9 am – 4 pm

Medium: Oil with Acrylic Layering

Experience Level: Intermediate (some painting experience with either or both mediums)

In this 3-day workshop we will explore strategies for combining the expedience of an Acrylic Imprimature (Colored Ground) and further refined Acrylic Underpainting with layers of Luscious Oil Overpainting and Glaze.

One of the first issues in this approach to Oil over Acrylic is which comes first! It’s the Acrylic!  Adhesion is the key and Oil will adhere to the dry layer of Acrylic and Acrylic won’t adhere to the dry layer of Oil paint.

Day One: We will discuss the best supports for modern painting and the best way to prime and prepare them for painting. We will cover a basic palette of colors in Golden Acrylics and then Williamsburg Oils that will meet most of your color mixing needs in an economical and practical way.

Day Two: Painting Oil over the Acrylic and also look at some of the unique Williamsburg Pigments and Mediums that I find exceptionally useful for specific applications in Landscape/Figurative and Alla Prima painting.

Day Three: We will paint Oils over some of the more edgy acrylic grounds and gels that give oil painters fresh options and textures for their paintings.

We will finish with Varnishing options for Oils over Acrylics.

**We will do all this using a bare minimum to none of any volatile solvent to modify our paint or to clean brushes and tools and most importantly our hands and skin.

Artist’s Statement:  My Work is informed by nature, a kind of mythical nature. The power of storms, the spiritual quality of the elements, the beauty, grace and ferocity of plants and animals…. Something greater than myself, something I can’t comprehend. Painting and making monotypes is my search for the mystery within the subject, within myself.
