Mixed Media Transfer Techniques I with Michelle Sales

November 2, 2023 | Thursday | 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

  • Experience – Students should have prior transferring images to surfaces.
  • Medium – Mixed Media
  • Note: A lab fee of $40.00 is payable directly to the instructor on the day of the workshop.  See below for the list of supplies provided by the instructor.

Artists from the past and present have often used images taken from existing materials such as magazines, postcards, old books, photocopies, and more to enhance their artwork. There now exists a multitude of transfer techniques available to artists.

In this six-hour workshop you will learn to transfer images from various sources such as magazines, photographs, and ink or laser jet images onto cradled wood board and canvas utilizing transfer paper. Many of the transfers created in this workshop can be incorporated into other images.  We will explore various methods of layering images using acrylic paint, stamps, and other mixed media to create dimensional effects.

*** Please note actual images will not be destroyed, instructor will be using images participants have selected, and these will be printed on instructor-provided transfer paper.

 We Will Cover:

  • Transferred images and their application in art
  • Legal and ethical aspects of using images created by others
  • How to transfer an image to canvas and cradled wood board using transfer paper (supplied by instructor)
  • How to layer your images to create an illusion of depth
  • Color, contrast, design and composition of images
  • How to use, acrylic paint, fabric, stamps, and other mixed media to further enhance your images

Student Supplies Needed for Class:

IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE READ!!!

Participants will need to select photos/images that will fit on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of copy paper. All images or photos need to be high contrast, meaning clear borders between light and dark areas. Color or black and white images are acceptable but light areas should be clearly lighter than dark areas. You may choose several smaller photos that will fit on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper and attach them with two-sided tape. You may also send a photo that will take up a full sheet of copy paper. Please create three 8.5 x 11 copies of images. After you select the images, please make a good copy of them, and send them as an attachment to michellesworkbox@yahoo.com

*Please send only good quality, high contrast images with lots of color or black and white. Dark or cloudy images will not make a good laser print.

Please send your images TWO WEEKS prior to the class date so that I can print them in time for class.

***If you do not send images, you will be using pre-printed images provided by the instructor during class.
