Mixed Media Transfer Techniques with Michelle Sales

December 13, 2022 | Tuesday | 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

All levels of experience are welcome – beginning to advanced!

Note: A lab fee of $25.00 is payable directly to the instructor on the first day of the workshop.  Click the Materials List tab above to see the supplies students need to bring with them as well as supplies provided by the instructor.

 

Artists from the past and present have often used images taken from existing materials such as magazines, postcards, old books, photocopies, and more to enhance their artwork. There now exists a multitude of transfer techniques available to artists.

In this six-hour workshop you will learn to transfer images from various sources such as magazines, photographs, and ink or laser jet images onto cradled wood board and canvas utilizing transfer paper. Many of the transfers created in this workshop can be incorporated into other images.  We will explore various methods of layering images using acrylic paint, stamps, and other mixed media to create dimensional effects. This class is appropriate for all levels of skills or experience.

*** Please note actual images will not be destroyed, instructor will be using images participants have selected, and these will be printed on instructor-provided transfer paper.

 We Will Cover:

  • Transferred images and their application in art
  • Legal and ethical aspects of using images created by others
  • How to transfer an image to canvas and cradled wood board using transfer paper (supplied by instructor)
  • How to layer your images to create an illusion of depth
  • Color, contrast, design and composition of images
  • How to use, acrylic paint, fabric, stamps, and other mixed media to further enhance your images

ARTIST  BIOGRAPHY

Michelle Sales was born in Chicago, Illinois where she lived much of her life. She recently moved full time to Sedona finding it immensely inspirational in the creation of her work. Michelle has been expressing herself forcefully with pigment and mixed media since childhood. Her early work was as a painter, but sculpture soon became her focus. Currently, Ms. Sales works in two and three dimensional media, as well as mixed media jewelry design.

In 1998, Michelle Sales received a Recognition Scholarship from The School of the Art Institute in Chicago. She received Her BFA in 2001. Her area of interest was mixed media and material studies.

Nature and its myriad shapes textures and colors inform her work today. Ms. Sales enjoys hiking and creates photo journals taken from these hikes. These photos serve as inspiration and are often incorporated into her work.

Ms. Sales maintains a working studio in Sedona Arizona. She teaches workshops and classes in mixed media and jewelry design.

Michelle Sales’ work has won awards and recognition in both national and international exhibitions. Her pieces have been shown for many years at SOFA Chicago, Navy Pier (Sculptural Object Functional Art) and can be found in private and museum collections. Ms. Sales is represented by Vale Craft Gallery, Chicago IL

Student Supplies Needed for Class:

  • acrylic paints (4-6 colors)
  • colored pencils/ or crayons
  • rubber brayer
  • acrylic paint brushes: 2-4 fine and medium and one 2-inch brush
  • scotch tape
  • blow dryer
  • spray bottle for water
  • Liquitex or Golden gloss gel medium: These are the best brands of gel gloss medium to use for transfers as they provide better image resolution.
  • 2 cradled wood panels no larger than 10 x 10 ( 7/8 depth wood panels)
  • 2 flat canvas panels no larger than 10 x 10 (Canvas wrapped heavy cardboard)
  • (Cradled panel boards can be found at: Amazon typically in sets of four or five. Hobby Lobby carries” Masters Touch” brand cradled boards often on sale. Dick Blick Art Supply carries a large variety of cradled boards online)
  • Flat canvas panels are sold at Hobby Lobby, Dick Blick, Michaels, or Amazon.
  • 1-2 magazines old or new: Glossy or matte, color or black and white. I like to use fashion and National Geographic magazines, if you have them. Please note there will be an assortment of old magazines available for use in class.

If desired, participants may bring fabric scraps, beads, string, stamps, etc. for further embellishment of your images.

Lab Fee = $25.00 payable to instructor (cash or check)

  • Three pieces 8.5” x 11” transfer paper blank

Cancellation Policy

Registration:

  • Each student must enroll individually
  • Students may register online or by calling the Sedona Arts Center’s Administrative Offices in the Art Barn, toll-free at 888-954-4442 or locally at 928-282-3809
  • Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express are accepted or student may pay with cash or check by registering in person during office hours at the Art Barn

In-Person and Online Workshops Registration/Cancellation Policy:

  • Payment in full is due upon registration, or a payment plan can be put in place by the student upon check-out through Sezzle.
  • There is a 15% Cancellation Fee for any cancellations made before December 6, 2022. Remaining balance will be refunded.
  • There are no refunds after December 6, 2022.
  • If Sedona Arts Center cancels the workshop for any reason, all payments made will be refunded in full.

Important Cancellation Policy Message:

The Sedona Arts Center is not responsible for providing make-up sessions or issuing refunds, credits, or transfers for courses missed as a result of illness, emergencies, or other events beyond our control. There are absolutely no refunds after the cut-off date for any reason, unless the Sedona Arts Center has to cancel the workshop, then all fees paid will be refunded in full.

Covid-19 Update for In-Person Classes and Workshops: 

As long as SAC is able to provide an environment that adheres to the CDC guidelines for social gatherings, and assuming all other normal criteria are met and the workshop or class goes forward, the above cancellation policies are in effect.
