Becky Altman
Becky Altman is a Sedona-based ceramist whose work explores the beauty, resilience, and complexity of women’s bodies. Growing up in Chicago, she was immersed in the art world through her grandmother, Edith Altman, a well-known artist who nurtured her love for creativity. After studying illustration, ceramics, and painting in college, Becky moved to Prague, where she taught ceramics and developed art programs at international schools. Her journey eventually led her back to the U.S., where a cross-country road trip reignited her passion for ceramics. Soon after, she began studying with Dennis Ott, who reawakened her creativity and brought joy back into her artistic practice. Her current body of work, "Every BODY is SOMEBODY," began with her first solo ceramics exhibition of 42 pieces, launching First Fridays at Rovang Ceramics in August 2023. It was inspired by a transformative moment when a ceramics classmate asked Becky to sculpt her body and shared her story. This encounter sparked a series of sculptures honoring the beauty of real women’s bodies, scars, and stories, challenging societal norms and celebrating individuality. The focus is on recognizing women for who they truly are, embracing imperfections, and showcasing the narratives that their bodies carry. Through storytelling, these pieces foster understanding and connection. As a Master’s in Counseling student and a Health and Wellness Coach, Becky’s work is deeply rooted in listening to people’s stories and holding space for their emotions—skills that seamlessly integrate into her art. "Every BODY is SOMEBODY" encourages vulnerability and redefines how we view and discuss women’s bodies. Becky’s work is available at the Sedona Artist Market and will soon be featured at Practical Art in Phoenix.
