The workshop will begin with a brief history of the art of Shibori, followed by a demonstration of the three simple, basic methods of folding, binding, and using twisting methods to create unique patterns on the fabric. For the class we will use traditional permanent Indigo dyed cotton. Bring long latex gloves!

Connie Ortberg

First, you should know that I am passionate about nature. An avid gardener of many years, and finding inspiration in every leaf, bird, bloom, and landscape before me. Some of my favorite outdoor views include lakes, rivers, and beachscapes. There is something both calming and soothing when I’m near water. I love the color Indigo.

I first explored painting, print making, and photography in High School, but left painting behind when life got busy. Then in the 90’s, I dabbled in small compositions of watercolor botanical illustrations and landscapes, taking a few community classes here and there.

For the most part, I am self-taught.

After many years of creating other kinds of art, including jewelry making, I decided it was time to try painting once again. In the last three years I have poured myself into painting with Acrylics, including onto cotton fabrics. I also have taken fabric painting one step further incorporating free machine embroidery onto them, creating multi textural pieces.

Most recently, I have become fascinated with Shibori, the process of using resistance techniques, using folding, wrapping, and wringing of fabric to create unique geometrical patterns onto fabric. Traditionally Indigo dye has been used and this is what I have been creating using pieces of 100% cotton. It’s an absolutely mesmerizing process, as no two pieces ever are the same.

As I continue to explore, express, and immerse myself in this new artful opportunity, my hope is you’ll find something that stirs your soul too.

It gives me great joy to share art that creates feelings of calmness, peace, and serenity.
