Glazing in Oils Crash Course
with Cyndi Thau

Oct 3, 5, 7, 9  |  Sat, Mon, Wed, Fri  |  SAC Theatre Studio  |  1-4pm  |  4 Class Sessions

Color, Light, Shadow, Translucency – These are the ingredients that we will work with to create a beautiful painting for you to take home. Our subject will be flowers and using the glazing technique we will apply thin layer upon layer of oil paint to achieve the depth and translucency associated with all things in nature.

Students will be taught how to choose a composition, transfer it to the canvas and then begin the process of laying in color. This class will be taught in four sessions to allow for critical drying time between layers. We will focus on light and shadow, paying attention to brushwork and edges as we build up the design. Paintings will be done on a gallery wrap canvas and students will be given a choice of images from which to work. Attention to detail is important and even more critical is the use of light and shadow to form the shapes while laying in color to complete the design.

Each of the four sessions will begin with a demonstration and instruction followed by individual attention. We will discuss composition, color mixing, edges, blending, and values. At the end of the fourth session, each student will have a beautifully completed painting to grace your wall at home.

Open to all levels and all materials included!

Cyndi Thau

Cyndi Thau

From time spent outdoors and traveling to time spent in the studio Cyndi has always wanted to keep art a central focus in her life. Originally from Arizona, Cyndi attended college at Arizona State University where she obtained a degree in design from the College of Architecture. She later obtained a second degree in computer graphic design. This was followed by studies with a variety of artists including Tom Browning, Gretchen Lopez, Joshua Been, and Betty Carr. Upon graduation Cyndi had an opportunity to live and work in Alaska at a remote fly-out fly fishing lodge where she was able to observe the wildlife and culture that abounds. Between the summer seasons in Alaska, Cyndi spent five months in South America. She studied at a Spanish language school in Ecuador followed by working in a remote section of Chile.

As the time in Alaska came to a close she elected to relocate to Central America where she could focus on developing her skills as an artist while continuing to learn Spanish. Costa Rica became the country of choice and it was here that she opened a small art gallery close to the beach. She spent seven years living and working as an artist in this beautiful location. In addition to operating the gallery she spent each day creating new pieces of art which included paintings, murals, and mosaics.

It was during this time that the love of flowers developed. “I am fascinated by the forms, colors, depth, and the play of light and shadow that interact to make a painting. Most of my paintings are close up, detailed compositions rather than a more overall view. I use thin layer upon layer of oil paint to achieve the translucency that I associate with all things in nature”.  In general these painting are colorful, detailed and large and grace the homes of clients around the world.

Cyndi now resides in the peaceful region of Oak Creek Canyon, outside of Sedona, Arizona.

“Enjoyed the class immensely. It opened a whole new world for me in how I see/perceive the world.”

“Vince Fazio has the ability to condense core practices of drawing into 4 experiential sessions. He is an excellent instructor, patient, encouraging. His feedback helped me see more about light and shadow and proportion. I feel like my brain expanded perceptually. I am encouraged to keep on with learning to draw.”

“I was one of the least experienced students in the class but he never once made me feel hopeless. He always found something to praise in each student's work. We had several famous Sedona artist's in our class but I never knew it until the end of the last day! He had treated us all equally. WOW!”

“Adult art education at its best! In Crash Course for Drawing, Vince Fazio provides results-oriented, professional instruction complete with positive encouragement and constructive feedback.”

“Vince imbues the class with enthusiasm, brings out work that in some cases is better than the student has managed to create in earlier work, works carefully one on one without favoring students, is very articulate, and patient.”

“Greatly appreciated Vince's teaching style. Explained what the objective of the evening was; lectured briefly on the basic points related to the objective; demonstrated the lecture points; then had students draw using the points presented to achieve the objective, providing relevant feedback as we worked.”
