Description

Exploring and Developing Glazes with John Post

Wednesdays |  4 pm-7 pm  |  6 Instructor-Led Class Sessions + 6 Open Studio Practice Sessions

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the creation and modification of ceramic glazes. Students will begin by learning how to read glaze recipes and accurately prepare liquid glaze batches. Building on this foundation, the course explores techniques for developing multiple glaze variations from a limited number of initial batches.

What You’ll Learn:

Glaze Fundamentals – Learn to read glaze recipes and accurately mix glazes.

Blending Techniques – Explore four key methods: line blending, biaxial blending, triaxial blending, and color blending. Each technique refines surface qualities (matte, satin, gloss) and enhances color and opacity.

Surface & Color Development – Experiment with different finishes and colorants to achieve a wide range of effects.

Individualized Exploration – Whether you’re a beginner or advanced student, this class allows for personal experimentation with glaze formulas that interest you.

Class Details:

Limited Enrollment – To ensure a personalized experience, the class is limited to 8 students.

Required Equipment – An N95 dust mask or respirator is required, as we will be mixing glazes in every class session.

Materials Provided – All glaze-making materials and supplies will be available for student use.

This class is dedicated entirely to glaze development and does not cover application or decorative techniques. Whether you’re new to glaze formulation or looking to refine your expertise, this hands-on course offers valuable insights into the science and artistry of ceramic glazes.

John Post

John Post is a retired K-12 art teacher whose focus in the classroom was clay and painting. He holds a Master of Arts in Ceramics from Wayne State University in Detroit. He also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in sculpture from Wayne State University. In retirement, he works on creating functional pottery fired to cone 10 in his gas kiln in Sedona, Arizona. His favorite part of the pottery-making process is creating new glazes.

Tools & Equipment:

Please note that purchasing a respirator is a class requirement. A respirator for dust is necessary for glaze mixing (please have it ready for the first class). If you already have a respirator, you’re welcome to use it; otherwise, I’ll recommend one for you.

The first link is for the respirator and the second link is for the filters that fit onto it. I like this respirator because it comes in small, medium, and large. Make sure you select your size at the respirator mask link when you order both of these items.

Additional Materials: All glaze-making supplies will be provided.

Materials & Safety:

Please ensure you have your respirator with filters at the first class, as we will begin mixing glazes on day one.

**For the safety of everyone, no one will be permitted to stay inside the class without a respirator.
