Dive Deep into Watercolors

Crash Course with Karen Elaine (4 Sessions)

This course is about exploring watercolors beyond the norm in a creative, playful, and intimate way. If you are seasoned in watercolor, you may enhance your work by experimenting with a variety of watercolors and mark-making techniques. If you are a novice or have never tried watercolors before, this course will help you learn some basic techniques and avoid pitfalls a beginner sometimes faces. This is not your Mamma’s traditional watercolor course! Be prepared to have some fun and enjoy the deep dive into Karen Elaine’s watercolor realm.

Exploring Watercolor
The first session is devoted to exploring watercolors playfully. You will become intimate with the unique properties of a variety of watercolors and substrates by making color swatches and mixes into whimsical designs.

Jumping into Watercolor
In the second session we will create delicate and dramatic watercolor washes as well as atmospheric backgrounds. We’ll explore watercolor mediums and surfaces such as gesso, papers, boards and journals for enhancing watercolor creativity and spontaneity.

Watercolor Deep Dive
In the third session we will explore layering, glazing and pattern making techniques to create textures in watercolor. We’ll be creating intuitively and playfully inside masked watercolor surfaces that can be made into cards, mini paintings or inserted into journals.

Ascending to the Surface
In the fourth and final session we will utilize the exercises from the previous sessions (and learn a couple of new tricks) to create a representational watercolor painting. No drawing skills are needed for any of the sessions.
