The quest for ‘perfection’ can bring with it fear of making mistakes and can result in an inhibited style. I will share some of my working methods concentrating on painting landscapes, water, figures, sky, sunset and still life subjects that have a bit of punch!

Using direct strokes on a textured surface to emphasize “brushwork we will learn how to simplify our approach to achieve exciting impressionistic paintings that are flooded with light.

We will add elements of abstraction but still keep some association with reality. This workshop is for those willing to go through the door marked ‘leaving your comfort zone’ and enter a world of exciting and expressive pastel application. We will also experiment with ways exciting ways to introduce more color and light into our work. Each day will start with a demonstration with heaps of challenges and loads of individual help at the easel.

Tony will be judging the Arizona Pastel Association’s national juried exhibition while he is visiting the Sedona Arts Center. The exhibition will be held in the Sedona Arts Center’s Special Exhibition Gallery adjacent to the workshop studio space.

Award winning painter, instructor and author Tony Allain has been painting for over 40 years. A self-taught painter of colour, light and movement with a complete understanding of his surroundings. Born and raised in the Channel Islands he moved to paint and live in Cornwall to capture the unique clarity of light living on the peninsular of the West Country. Tony has exhibited extensively over the years, his work can be found in many leading galleries as well as private and corporate collections worldwide, including the Maritime Museum, Guernsey and Queen Mary 2, Cunard Liner. He has exhibited with The Pastel Society of America in New York, the Royal Society of Marine Artists, London, The International Pastel Exhibition, Suzhou, China and the Pastel Society, Mall Galleries, London. A move to New Zealand in 2006 proved to be a turning point in his career with the acceptance as a Master of the Pastel Artists of New Zealand.

His work is regularly featured in The Artist Magazine, the Pastel Journal and the Practique des Arts.

Tony has returned to live and work from his studio in the ancient market seaside town of Marazion in West Cornwall.

  • Pastels
    As many artist quality soft pastels as you feel comfortable with. Colour range is more important than quality.
  • Assortment of papers
    Art Spectrum Colourfix Original texture, Uart, Pastel Premier, Canson Mi-Tientes, Wallis (if you have it) or handmade support. (NO WHITE PAPER).
  • Your sketch journals.
  • Pencils, ruler, masking tape or clips
  • Easel and smooth drawing/backing board, cushioned with foam board.
  • Hand wipes/Paper towels.
  • Photos, reference you feel at ease with.
  • Selection of permanent ink BLACK wedge/chisel shaped marker pens the fatter the better.
  • Toned sketch book (I will use a Strathmore toned tan and grey)
  • A few tubes of gouache. White, Naples Yellow, Cadmium Red, Orange, Fr. Ultra Blue and a decent watercolour brush.
  • A sense of humor!!

    I use mainly Unison, Great American, Ludwig, Schminke.
