Ceramics – Thursdays

Thursdays|  4 – 7 pm  |  6 Instructor-Led Class Sessions + 6 Open Studio Practice Sessions

This session will be taught by John Post.

This six-week course focuses on developing, strengthening and advancing one’s skills using the potters wheel, as well as understanding the properties of clay in order to expand one’s potential to architecturally create a version of what one envisions. Have fun, gain knowledge and confidence.

Small class size ensures that each student receives personalized, one-on-one instruction and encouragement. Open for ages 12 through adult. The Sedona Arts Center’s ceramic department operates free from the constraints of grades. Tuition includes the first 25-pound bag of clay, firings, glazes, and the opportunity to attend one open studio session per week.

Pottery Tools – There are 9-piece tool kits available for purchase in the Ceramics Studio for $15 per kit. Purchase of the tool kit is not required to take the class.

John Post

John Post lives and works in Sedona, and is a retired K-12 art teacher whose focus in the classroom was clay and painting. He holds a Master of Arts in Ceramics from Wayne State University in Detroit. He also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in sculpture from Wayne State University. In retirement he works on creating functional pottery fired to cone 10 in his gas kiln. His favorite part of the pottery making process is creating new glazes. He uses an iron-rich clay body that bleeds into the surfaces of his glazes. These glazes feel soft and buttery to the touch while also appearing rather stone-like and natural. John includes new glaze tests in every firing to ensure that his work changes and evolves over time. The natural evolution in John’s work is the result of the joy he finds experimenting with glaze chemistry and because he loves to be surprised when opening his kiln.

First bag of clay included.  Additional bags of clay may be purchased during class for $45 per bag which includes glazing & firing fees.  Enrolled students may also participate in one open studio session per week.

Pottery Tools – There are 9-piece tool kits available for purchase in the Ceramics Studio for $15 per kit. Purchase of the tool kit is not required to take the class.
