Ceramics – Advanced* with John Post and Ben Roti

*Note that the Monday class is reserved for experienced ceramicists! (Beginners are welcome in Tuesday or Wednesday classes or in the Pottery Wheel for Beginners on Saturdays.)

Mondays  |  4 – 7 pm  |  6 Instructor-Led Class Sessions + 6 Open Studio Practice Sessions

The Sedona Arts Center’s ceramic department operates free from the constraints of grades and benefits from the talents of its ceramic faculty and assistants as well as nationally recognized guest instructors. This combination allows our department to offer flexible and diverse programming in both traditional and contemporary techniques.

Through demonstration and one-on-one instruction, students will learn to throw a variety of forms on the potter’s wheel or techniques to create hand-built works. Slab roller, extruder and forms are also available to create functional and decorative pieces. Tuition includes the first 25-pound bag of clay, firings and glazes, and one open studio session per week.

Pottery Tools – There are 9-piece tool kits available for purchase in the Ceramics Studio for $15 per kit. Purchase of the tool kit is not required to take the class.

John Post

John Post

John Post lives and works in Sedona, and is a retired K-12 art teacher whose focus in the classroom was clay and painting. He holds a Master of Arts in Ceramics from Wayne State University in Detroit. He also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in sculpture from Wayne State University. In retirement he works on creating functional pottery fired to cone 10 in his gas kiln. His favorite part of the pottery making process is creating new glazes. He uses an iron-rich clay body that bleeds into the surfaces of his glazes. These glazes feel soft and buttery to the touch while also appearing rather stone-like and natural. John includes new glaze tests in every firing to ensure that his work changes and evolves over time. The natural evolution in John’s work is the result of the joy he finds experimenting with glaze chemistry and because he loves to be surprised when opening his kiln.

Ben Roti

Ben Roti

Ben Roti is a ceramic artist originally from Spirit Lake, IA. He attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA, from 2006 to 2010 and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics. During college, Ben’s ceramic work concentrated on the elements of world conflict culminating in his BFA show, “The Cost of War.” After finishing his BFA, Ben accepted a position as a studio assistant to ceramic artist, Don Reitz in Clarkdale, Arizona.

Over several years (2010-2014), Ben had the opportunity to work with Don Reitz in the studio, assist with workshops in Montana and Florida, and was instrumental in the installations of gallery shows in Chicago, Denver, and Kansas City. At the Reitz Ranch, Ben furthered his knowledge in atmospheric firing with wood and salt types as well as a soda kiln in St. Petersburg, FL. He also was a part of constructing and repairing kilns.

Since leaving the Reitz Ranch, Ben has returned to creating functional works using low-fire earthenware clay and has begun to develop a new body of work. Using reductive techniques, through sandblasting, Ben is able to build variations and create layers, which are inspired by the results that are commonly seen in atmospheric firing.

Ben currently resides in Camp Verde, Arizona, with his wife, Kami, and two sons.

First bag of clay included. Additional bags of clay may be purchased during class for $45 per bag. Glazing and firing fees included. Enrolled students may also participate in one open studio session per week.

Pottery Tools – There are 9-piece tool kits available for purchase in the Ceramics Studio for $15 per kit. Purchase of the tool kit is not required to take the class.

"Dennis is ever-watchful and teaches and supports each student at his or her own level of expertise. He is always relaxed, supportive, and empowers each of us to challenge ourselves and succeed. We are each so productive that we often run out of space to store all the pieces we are working on. However what common space is available is generously shared, and our work cycles through the many steps quite seamlessly. The camaraderie in the classes is wonderful!" - JM
