Suburban Chicago based fiber artist, Mary Beth Michaels combines her traditional sewing and quilting skills with her fine arts background. As a young child, Mary Beth learned to sew under the patient guidance of her mother. Later, she attended and graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she explored various mediums from clay and metal to fabric dying and design. Over the past years, Mary Beth has been an active member in the North Suburban Needle Arts Guild, and her current focus is on mixed media collage quilts. Her work is inspired by the feeling of nature, utilizing simple shapes, hand painted elements, and rich colors. She investigates the patterns and textures of fabric while creating movement through her stich work. “Sometimes, I love the back of the quilt as much as the front.” Mary Beth invites the viewer to take a closer look.
