Kathryn Pellman (She/Her)
Kathryn Pellman thinks of her quilts as modern folk art and herself as an artist, fashionista, quilter, sewist, cook, baker, gardener and storyteller. Her Fashionistas and Word Salad poems meld quilting and fashion design combining her passions for quilting, fashion and storytelling. They are are a celebration and exploration of women and femininity, lives, friendships and romantic relationships, real and imagined. Commercial fabric is her paint, thread her ink, and the sewing machine her pen.
Her quilts have a strong connection to traditional quilting making in their construction with the sandwiching of three layers that are stitched together and broderie perse, a traditional style of applique when images from commercially printed fabric are cut and appliqued on to a background fabric.
Long limbed and knobby kneed fashionistas that invoke fashion illustration make up her Word Salad, Fashionistas and Girlfriends series. Her newest series of life size and larger Angry Women is how she expresses her views and feelings about the issues that impact all of us as Americans.
In 2019, Kathryn was in three segments of Quilting Arts TV and has been featured in numerous publications including Art Quilting Studio, Spring 2019 in the Quilting the Odd and Unusual feature and Exploring Art Quilts with SAQA: Volume 2, 2022, Artist to Watch Interview.
She is a Juried Artist member of SAQA (Studio Art Quilters Association), has a Certificate in Fashion Design and has been sewing ever since she could thread a needle. Kathryn’s new book is Word Salad, Fashionistas and Girlfriendsand is the coauthor of Backart — On the Flip Side.
