Salon Des Refuses Exhibition
January 17 - January 19
Don’t refuse to see the Salon Des Refuses Exhibition!
Salon Des Refuses, an exciting rogue art exhibit, is Opening on Friday, Jan 17th at the Sedona Art Center in Uptown Sedona off 89A on Art Barn Rd. This exceptional exhibit is a tongue in cheek reference to the 1863 Salon Des Refuses art exhibit in France, where local artists—who later became famous (e.g. Degas, Monet, etc.)—were refused entry as their work was so different from mainstream traditional realism.
This new “Refuses” exhibit is a collection of those Artists refused entry to the international Surrealist 31 Woman exhibit. The purpose of Refuses is to bring the community together and showcase local women’s art. This work takes a broader look at surrealism, adding today’s contemporary and divergent styles with a palpable feminine feel.
Some other events coinciding with the exhibits is a talk about Surrealism by speaker Mark Rownd on Friday, January 17th from 4-6 p.m., and a Woman’s March from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18th. The March will begin and end at the Sedona Art Center giving another opportunity to view this exhibit. The Woman’s March will include a snack food truck, refreshments, and a post March rally with music and regional and local speakers.
2020 is the considered the “Year of the Woman” as it is the 100th year Celebration of the19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote. This is just the first of many female exhibitions that will line the walls of the Sedona Art Center this year. This exhibit can be viewed on Friday, January 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the opening reception that same evening 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The show is also available for viewing Saturday, January 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday January 19th from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.
