Responding to Nature Plein Air Painting with Suzie Baker

October 10–12, 2018

The workshop will kick off with a lecture and demo. Students receive instruction on principles of painting ranging from drawing, color, value, composition, color theory and so much more. Every day, you will apply what is being taught by getting outside to paint, observing and recording nature as it changes. Suzie will demo on location and offer one-on-one instruction in the field at every student's easel.

Suzie's goal is to help each student with strategies for personal progression through group instruction, example, and individual interaction. Her humorous, informative manner makes tackling this multi-faceted challenge a fun and rewarding experience.

"Not only is Suzie an accomplished Plein Air painter, AND portrait artist, but she is one of the nicest people you'll meet. When having a conversation with her, you get the feeling that she's really listening. She'll offer you good and constructive advice, and throw in a couple of favors as well! In the short time that I've known her, she's bent over backward for me. She's a kind, giving artist." —Marjorie Hicks

"Wow! I learned so much and am ready to go to the next level by way of improved value in my paintings. Suzie was well organized, presented the material in a clear manner and was patient with all the questions I'm sure she's answered hundreds of times. I definitely recommend her to others!" —Elyse Taylor

Suzie Baker is an award-winning artist whose paintings have been featured in Fine Art Connoisseur, Plein Air, and Southwest Art Magazines. She has been named "Three to Watch" by both Southwest Art and Fine Art Connoisseur. She serves on the board of directors and is a signature member of Oil Painters of America and regularly exhibits in prestigious national shows and invitationals. In addition to being a still life and portrait artist, Suzie has been painting en plein air since she was a teenager.

"I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Advertising and Fine Arts from Louisiana Tech University. Following my degree program, I worked as an ad agency Art Director before trading my Pantone swatches for a brush and palette. I paint in oils and am motivated by color, immediacy of stroke, composition, the camaraderie of other artists, and ultimately the desire to evolve as an artist. I strive to create paintings that communicate confidence in execution and that exhibit a fresh, intuitive, and spontaneous vitality. I will paint till I can paint no more. When I'm not painting, I'm thinking about what I want to paint next. I can't not paint."
