Joshua Been was our keynote speaker for last year's Sedona Plein Air Festival this workshop had a large waiting list last year so - back by popular demand - join Joshua Been for this exciting workshop in Sedona.

Joshua Been is an influential painter and instructor celebrating his 11th annual participation in the Sedona Plein Air Festival October 13–20, 2018

 

Workshop Description

In this workshop, through clearly explaining concepts in the translation process from a three dimensional environment to a two dimensional surface, I will clear up the mystery, and strengthen your knowledge of the process and visual language of painting, from the source (plein air) to the studio. I teach a 4 pronged visual language approach (Value, Shapes, Edges, and Texture) that is both easy to remember and an effective way of breaking down difficult subject matter into manageable information.

A four pronged approach to learning Visual Language

1. VALUE: I will help you comprehend the relationships in your VALUES which includes all of the color discussion.
2. SHAPE: We will talk about the importance of SHAPE to design, viewer recognition, readability, and linear perspective.
3. EDGES: We’ll explore how to see and understand EDGES, both tangible and intangible, and their relative importance.
4. TEXTURE: I will demonstrate how different ways of applying paint enhances the viewer experience. This refers to both brushwork, and paint quality.

Incorporating the 4 Visual Language elements into design and composition will be an enormous focus in creating strong visual statements. It is through this understanding that good painting ideas become great painting ideas, and keep an artist fully engaged in the process. We’ll start each painting session with pre-sketches where the four elements are contemplated, and arranged in a visually pleasing way. Each day I will demonstrate the pre-sketch to color sketch process, working small and quickly to allow a lot of time for students to explore the process on their own with me engaging each student with one on one, effective help.

Day Planner:

Thursday October 25th
9:00 Meeting at Sedona Art Center.
9-10:30 Overview of SHAPES, VALUES, EDGES, and TEXTURE as well as discussion of the various art definitions, relationships, etc. Also a color mixing demonstration.
10:30-11:00 Carpool/convoy to a destination.
11:00-12:30 Pre-sketch and color sketch painting demonstration. (Focus on accuracy, translating what you see)
12:30-1:00 lunch break
1:00-5:00 Group painting session, I will be helping individually.

Friday October 26th
9:00am meet.
9-9:30 carpool/convoy to a destination.
9:30-10:00 Pre-sketch and color sketch painting demonstration. (Focus on varying the idea, moving things around, linear perspective, viewpoint, lighting)
10:00-12:30 Group painting sessions with and me walking around helping individually.
12:30-1:00 lunch break (sack lunches provided)
1:00-2:30 Another pre-sketch and color sketch painting demonstration.
2:30-5:00 Another group painting session.

Saturday October 27th
9:00am meet.
9-9:30 carpool/convoy to a destination.
9:30-10:00 Pre-sketch and color sketch painting demonstration. (Focus on edges, tangible vs. intangible, texture, and style)
10:00-12:30 Group painting session with me walking around helping individually.
12:30-1:00 lunch break
1:00-2:30 Pre-sketch and color sketch painting demonstration.
2:30-5:00 Another group painting session.

Sunday October 28th
9:00am-1:00pm Demonstration (open to the paying public for $50.00) included in your workshop tuition, and you will get preferred seating. Sit back and relax after 3 long days of painting, while I demonstrate blowing up a plein air color sketch into a larger canvas. This demonstration will be a wonderful overview, and a great opportunity to review and re-take notes on effective studio practices incorporating every bit of knowledge gained through the plein air experience. Throughout this demonstration, I'll be talking about crutial decisions in the process, and how to stay engaged, efficient, and deliberate in applying paint.



TUITION: $525

Class meets 9–5 on the first day at the Sedona Arts Center.

Payment Options: Students may pay in full or choose the payment-plan option during registration. The payment plan requires a non-refundable $125 deposit with the balance due 30 days before the first day of the workshop.

Cancellation/Refund Policy: The $125 deposit is non-refundable; the balance is due one month before the first day of the workshop. No refunds after the one-month cut-off date. If paying in full upon registration, $125 of the total tuition fee is non-refundable. There are absolutely no refunds after the 30 day cut-off date for any reason, unless the Sedona Arts Center has to cancel the workshop, then all money paid will be refunded in full.

Workshop Materials List


*A small drawing kit for doing pre-sketches (can be as simple as a pencil and paper, or I prefer a kit similar to the Sketchbox complete with a pencil, pen, and incremental value markers. available at Prolific Painter.
*Assortment of bristle/synthetic (flat) brushes (Rosemary long hangle, long flats) and a medium sized pallet knife.
*Paper towels (Viva brand works great)
*Brush cleaner jar with agitator (a jar needs something to scrub the bristles on, that's the agitator).
*Odorless paint thinner (I recommend Gamsol brand)
*10 6×8 canvases or panels for the plein air color sketches.
*3 8x10s or 9x12s for longer color sketches (nothing larger please, I spend a lot of time walking around helping each student individually, if you paint larger, I will not be able to help you because it will take too much time)
*A Portable Easel (I have one available called the 'Daytripper Easel'. check it out at Prolific Painter.
*Brimmed Hat
*Sunscreen

About Joshua Been

Born in 1974 Joshua Been had no shortage of outdoor adventures that cultivated his appreciation for the natural world. Drawing since he could manage a pencil, he was captivated by animation and cartooning. This interest remained with him throughout high school and an active duty enlistment in the US Army. Been then went on to pursue his BA in Fine Art at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. As a Magna Cum Laude graduate from this small liberal arts college, Been found interest in more than just art classes. He was active in theatre and performing arts, while studying Earth Sciences as well. This interdisciplinary foundation is evident in the intricacies and truthful fascination of his landscape as well as his figurative work.

After graduation, Been relocated to the Los Angeles area where he worked for several years in the entertainment industry as a Character Animator and Visual Development Artist. Cartoon Network, and Disney TV were some of the studios where he found work. It wasn't long, however, before Been craved a more liberating artform, and enrolled in some figure painting classes at the California Art Institute. While simplifying his life in order to pursue the more nomadic life of a painter, Been moved back to his native land in Colorado. For a short time in order to get his feet on the ground in CO, Been taught art and design to inmates at the Buena Vista Correctional Facility. He now lives and paints in Salida, a place known as the "Heart of the Rockies."

Plein Air to Studio Demonstration

Join in the last session of Joshua Been's 3.5-day workshop for a demonstration of his studio process as he works up a larger painting from a plein air study. This demonstration will be a wonderful overview, and a great opportunity to review and re-take notes on effective studio practices incorporating every bit of knowledge gained through the plein air experience.

Throughout this demonstration Josh be talking about crucial decisions in the process, and how to stay engaged, efficient, and deliberate in applying paint.

Note: Workshop participants will have reserved seating, but all registrants will be able to ask questions, participate fully and see the demonstration.
