Class meets 10 am to 5 pm on the first day
and 9 am to 4 pm on subsequent days.
Join us for inspiring demonstrations, lectures, encouragement and practice. You?ll learn how to coax hints of reality from an abstract background, how to integrate collage imagery, how to control values and colors for emotional emphasis, and how to suggest rather than delineate. You'll explore working intuitively, responding to what shows up, working in a series, mixing and utilizing neutrals for softer, more ethereal abstracts.
We'll touch on notions of confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, talent, play, inspiration, intuition, your mean critic, metaphor, symbolic elements, competition, marketing, your belief systems, finding balance, and more! There will be plenty of time for "playing" and creating along with individual attention and guidance.
Joan is especially gifted in helping students gain more freedom in the creative process and discover their own unique artistic voice. She believes that people are more open to learning and inspiration when they are having fun, so her workshops are filled with laughter and lightness. A multitude of approaches and techniques will give beginners encouragement and confidence, while more advanced students will benefit from Joan's insightful solutions to their artistic challenges.
Payment Options: Students may pay in full or choose the payment-plan option during registration. The payment plan requires a non-refundable $125 deposit with the balance due 30 days before the first day of the workshop.
Class meets 9 - 4 daily. The first meeting will be at the Sedona Arts Center Instructor will arrange location meetings for the duration of the week.

Contemporary Mixed Media
with Joan Fullerton
Brushes: Inexpensive 2" hardware brush for gel medium, a 1" synthetic flat brush, and a round brush for detail (no need for fancy brushes)
Brayer (hard) for rolling paint
Acrylic Paint: limited to a handful of colors plus black and white (I use black and white gesso.) I will also use 1 oz. bottles of Golden fluid acrylics: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, Turquois (Phthalo), Quinacridone Crimson, Titanium buff, Hansa yellow light, Red Oxide, Ultramarine Blue and Pyrrole orange. You can easily do this class with only the 1st three colors. Heavy body Acrylics can also be used.
Substrates - Your preference:140 lb. or 300 lb. watercolor paper and/or stretched canvas and/or cradled wood panels: I use Cheap Joes's Really Good Cradled Painting Panels. (I will demonstrate on all 3 of these substrates.) Bring at least 6 substrates (paper, canvas, panels, or combination)- minimum size 18x20
Pencils: Vine Charcoal: one stick
Textured or patterned collage papers (I use pages of an old book or musical score as collage material. Rice papers are good for actual texture.)
Xeroxed Photos: Have some black and white copies made of photos for collage material. (laser not inkjet) I like tree branches, crows, grasses, seedpods, bridges, etc. Email me if you want to use the images I use, I will send you some.
Stencils - I will bring some stencils to share if you don't own any.
Adhesive: 16 oz (or larger) of gel medium regular or soft gel, either gloss or matte This will be used for collage and texture - purchase larger size if you are prolific or like to add a lot of texture to your work.
Palette: freezer paper, disposable palettes or other
Small spray bottle (travel size) I purchase these from Target, Walmart or the Dollar Store.
Hand Protection: latex gloves or barrier cream
Apron or a smock
Journal/Notebook: for notes, ideas, drawing, etc.
Most important to bring is an attitude of play and curiosity!
Joan Fullerton holds a BFA and a MFA degree in painting from the University of Wyoming. She was a college art instructor at Laramie County Community College from 1990 to 2003 in Cheyenne, WY. She has made her mark and established her reputation as a well-known and respected artist and teacher.
Joan's work has been in galleries, juried shows and museums since the early 70's and she has shown internationally in Italy and Japan. She is published in the 2010 edition of Open Studios Press, Visual Journeys, Art of the 21st Century, Journeys to Abstraction #3, and is featured in Acrylic Artist Magazine Spring 2017.
